Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Nguyen.
Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Entrepreneurial ship has always been in my family. My father worked for himself in real estate for most of his career and successfully supported his family. I remember applying to the University of Texas Business School and including these same thoughts in the application. Throughout my career in cable and the energy industry I’ve always wanted to own my own business. I brainstormed different business ideas that often scared my husband! It wasn’t until the past 2-3 years we have really started to focus on bringing this idea into reality. We started to lay the groundwork to continue my father’s real estate business. My husband has been a part of that for about 5 years and so it made sense. Before really starting though, we changed directions. Last year we focused in on 2 businesses and it was really a difficult decision. In early 2017 we signed the papers to become Handyman Connection franchise owners.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think there is any person who starts a business and says it was smooth! Even though we had a game plan to help us get started, there are so many things to do. And juggling a family is always hard. We’ve had to make sacrifices and adjust to a new routine and schedule. We knew that it would be challenging coming into this but it never really hits you until you’re knee deep! It’s similar to starting a family.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Handyman Connection provides maintenance and repairs to residential and commercial properties. We do almost everything except AC and roofing. What sets us apart is our professionalism, commitment, and quality of work. We offer free estimates and a one-year warranty on our work. We are locally owned and know the importance of giving back to the community.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes we think Houston and the surrounding areas is a great place to start a business. One of the most important parts of owning your business is knowing your service/product and matching it with your target clientele.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
Today we have the advent of driverless cars artificial intelligence and automation. It will be interesting to see how this translates into the home. We have all the devices now that can connect to your phone like the refrigerator, thermostat, and sprinkler. I’m excited to see how this will change the way we live. We believe technology can help us proactively in manage and maintain our homes. This can be especially helpful for busy families or seniors who don’t have family nearby. Of course technology can never really replace the human touch. At Handyman Connection we use technology to deliver a better customer experience but we understand that our relationship with our customers is key.
Real estate should continue to be a solid investment, but also one of biggest decisions anyone makes. Using a service like ours to maintain such an important asset is a smart financial move. Millennials are very interested in travel and experiential vacations, which takes time away from home maintenance and repair. This is where we come in. We can help with small maintenance projects or remodeling and keep the value of your house current and competitive.
