Today we’d like to introduce you to Joumana Azzam.
Joumana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started this journey into mental health organically. I have always been curious about people, wanting to understand their thoughts, feelings, and what makes them who they are. That curiosity deepened when someone close to me struggled with severe depression. After witnessing the care they received, I remember feeling that sense of hope slowly returning after many dark days. That experience left a lasting impression on me and showed me a grounded, realistic view of healing.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in sociology and began my career in the corporate world, where I worked in Human Resources. Feeling unfilled, I did some soul-searching and eventually found my way into social work. After moving to Houston from Michigan, I earned my master’s degree in social work from Baylor University and spent the following years working as a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in diverse settings, from hospitals to academic institutions. My Lebanese American heritage, with its strong emphasis on community and hospitality, has deeply shaped my perspective, fostering openness, curiosity, and respect for everyone’s unique journey.
Building on those experiences, I knew that owning my own practice was the bigger vision, and in February 2025, I finally took that step. My practice, Self Mental Health Therapy, is built around the belief that self-discovery is a powerful and transformative journey. My goal is to guide clients in gaining insight into themselves – exploring every layer of who they are. It is not just about therapy; it is about self.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Along the way, I’ve faced seasons of navigating loss in different forms. Those experiences have shaped me, teaching me how to better hold space for others during their most difficult times. It gave me a deeper understanding of what healing can look like. It has influenced how I show up as a therapist, allowing me to connect with clients on a more authentic and compassionate level.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My approach is holistic, focusing on the whole person and fostering growth, resilience, and well-being. I strive to work alongside my clients as they develop healthier coping skills, deepen their understanding of thoughts and emotions, and work toward achieving their therapeutic goals.
At Self Mental Health Therapy, I truly care about supporting you on your journey. My practice is centered around three core values:
* Client-Centered Care – Your unique story matters to me, and I believe that mental health is closely connected to your physical, emotional, and overall well-being.
* Collaborative – Therapy is a partnership where we walk this path together, partnering to craft goals and outcomes that genuinely resonate with your unique journey.
* Specialized Therapeutic Approaches- Every path is unique. I use an eclectic blend of evidence-based methods, tailored to the individual needs and goals of each client.
I am particularly passionate about helping individuals navigate complex interpersonal and emotional challenges.
My specialties include: anxiety, women’s issues, relationship issues, depression, culturally competent care, and life adjustments, which include grief and loss.
I am proud that my brand feels warm, approachable, and inviting. It was thoughtfully curated over time with the intention that anyone who visits my page feels a sense of hope and optimism for what therapy can offer.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is helping people truly understand themselves. I believe that self-discovery is one of the most powerful tools we have. It creates space for healing, growth, and meaningful change. My own path into mental health was shaped by curiosity, personal experiences, and the realization that healing is never a straight line. Those experiences reinforced the importance of compassion and spaces where people feel seen and understood.
At the heart of my work is the belief that therapy is not just about talking about our problems, but about uncovering layers of identity, building healthier connections, and living more authentically.
