Meet Kara Additon of Kara Additon Photography in League City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Additon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started playing with a camera eleven years ago at the age of thirteen. When I moved to Texas at fourteen, I was placed into the introduction to journalism class where I discovered our photojournalism program. I originally wanted to join so I could get into school events for free and skip class to take pictures (those press passes were SO COOL). I signed up for the class and my teacher started letting me borrow the school camera (Canon Rebel T3i) for my own personal use at the age of sixteen; the year I shot my first wedding. Throughout high school, I was on the sidelines of every sporting event, theatre performance, and important event, camera in hand. My sophomore year, I was paid with a camera of my own (the Nikon D3100) to shoot my second wedding. I also began a two-year employment at a portrait studio where I held the highest regional sales average. In my senior year of high school, I interned under a local professional (with whom I still work with from time to time, but more as coworkers if anything) and my love for photography grew more than I could comprehend. During my senior year, I applied to the University of North Texas for a photography and graphic design degree. However, I could not afford to attend and I stopped practicing photography as a result. I shipped out for basic training in the Air Force shortly after. A year later, when I was stationed in California, I met another budding photographer and he offered to trade his camera for mine. When I came home after a year away, new camera in hand, I continued to work full-time for the military until I was told I might not have a job in the months to come. I decided to go heavy into my photography and within a week, I had built my entire website from scratch, designed my own logo, had business cards made, and even ran a few contests to get my name out. This was in 2014. Now, in 2017, I can comfortably say that I no longer get nervous on sessions or during weddings, and that I have finally established my style and workflow with all of my dream equipment. It took years of giving up and trying harder, and it paid off.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for my photography business. There were years at a time where I gave up altogether. Joining the military changed me and the way that my mind operates and I feel like I needed to reach a certain level of responsibility and maturity before I could become successful.

Please tell us about Kara Additon Photography.
I’m a portrait and wedding photographer who specializes in natural-light photography with an additional home-studio setting. I love being able to focus on the beauty of everyone around me. I believe that once you see people for who they truly are, you develop a whole new appreciation of life. This passion of mine is so much more than what is seems. It’s a lifestyle; a mentality that is permanently etched into my subconscious. I use the gifts I have to bring out the beauty in every individual I photograph. This is my contribution to the world.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly would not do anything differently. I believe that where I am right now is where I am supposed to be and all of my hard work and effort shows through my work.

Pricing:

  • All portrait sessions, regardless of type, are $400
  • Wedding photography starts at $1800

I have known Kara since she was a baby and it’s truly a blessing how far she’s come, how much she’s grown as a young woman and artist.

Kara shot a wedding at a wedding venue south of Houston, Kemah Gardens. We were so impressed with her talent and professionalism. Her images are over the top fantastic. She’s a joy to work with and we always look forward to shooting at the venue. We are extremely honored to have her on our preferred vendor list.
