Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Sadler.
Kris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My musical journey truly began during my younger years. Growing up, I had a large collection of CDs from a variety of artists and genres that I would listen to daily. I was always the life of the party wherever I went but never imagined myself becoming a DJ/Emcee until I was exposed to that world. My music career began as an Emcee at clubs, bars, and private functions in the Houston/surrounding areas in which I became intrigued with being a DJ. I grew more fascinated with the art of music by observing DJs that I worked with and other inspirations in the business.
With long hours of practicing variety of DJ techniques, I began to get booked at small bars/clubs and other private events. It was not until I was at the 2016 Houston Pride Parade that I was noticed by the CEO/Founder of Lesbians Of Color (L.O.C) Kendra Walker who booked me to DJ at one of her events. She looked at my Instagram and was fascinated by my energy and unique style. Getting booked by L.O.C gave me the courage to put myself out there to perform in front of larger crowds and to grow as a DJ/Performer.
I have performed in 2018 Houston Pride as an MC and 2019 Houston Pride as a headlining DJ, Resident DJ every 2nd Friday at Guava Lamp, and Nominated for 2019 Outsmart Magazine Favorite Female DJ and Best Event /Wedding DJ. I have been truly honored of the recognition and opportunities that I have received in my few years as a DJ.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life that’s worth having comes easy. Money is work, Love is work, and life is work. I put in a lot of time teaching myself how to beat match and follow different formulas when mixing tracks, adding effects, and reading the crowd. The beginning stages of djing requires a lot of time and patience. I would stay up for hours building my music library and learning how to blend songs together to create my own sound.
Booking into the industry is another struggle I faced. Establishing myself, getting the gigs, getting booked back, and standing out from the competition. Djing in my opinion is still a male driven industry and some venues may sometimes consider a male DJ over a Female Dj regardless of the quality of the performance.
Lastly, balancing my regular 9-5 job and my Dj business is a struggle. In the beginning your not going to cover all your bills djing alone. It takes mad hustle. Instead of me resting after work I am preparing my gigs, promoting myself, updating my music library, and organizing events. Balancing both lifestyles can be overwhelming at times, but it is 100% worth it when you hear the positive remarks from your clients.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I aims to entertain by providing a professional and fun experience! I works closely with clients every step of the way to ensure that all their entertainment needs are met and surpassed. I specialize in entertaining any crowd with any genre of music. I carry high energy and crowd interaction which sets me apart from others. I am most proud of the development over the last few years. I have grown from donating services to gaining numerous opportunities for residency, festivals and private events.
Currently, you can catch me mixing every 2nd Fridays at Guava Lamp from 9pm-2am for Bingo and Bottles. An event that I created which allows people to win great prizes, listen to great music, and to be around great vibes.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am a Houstonian born and raised. Houston is a great place for DJ’s who is starting out or who is a veteran in the DJ universe. Houston is so diverse and has grown musically throughout the years. Any artist can be inspired creatively by listening to the variety of music and experience the multitude of cultures that Houston has to offer.
