Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Whitney.
Lynn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Four years ago, while a branch manager at a bank, I had an idea to host an annual entrepreneurship conference teaching minorities how to become successful entrepreneurs. I was already spending time while at the bank, educating them on how to setup their business legally and get preapproved for Bank loans. Due to the low approval rates of minorities suddenly being approved so quickly, this caused the president of the bank to ask questions. Why is this branch producing more minority loans than it has in the past seven years? I then was approached by the president of our company at our next meeting when he asked what was my secret. I then explained that it was EDUCATION. Taking the time out to educate minority business owners on how to setup their business correctly, how to receive funding, how to do their taxes etc. was my secret.
The next day, I received a call from my manager stating that I was doing a fantastic job but it was too time-consuming for me to educate minorities and that I should do it on a Saturday… my off day. At that time, I was a single parent already working 50 hours a week at the bank and with less time to spend with my family. Now you are asking me to do this on the weekend?? No! At that moment, my mindset changed. I realized that although there was praise for the results, the process was not accepted.
So I created a conference called Mastering Entrepreneurship Conference in which we had 8 plus speakers teaching minorities about business credit, business plans, personal credit, business taxes, mental health as an entrepreneur, and more for less than $50.
Over 200 entrepreneurship showed up to the conference. That next year I decided to step out on faith and quit my great paying job to educate minorities business owners and hopefully change someone’s life. My first year of being a full-time entrepreneur, I created a financial literacy, banking, and entrepreneurship curriculum that is being taught in the public school systems.
My second year of being a full-time entrepreneur, I decided to turn the conference into an online school to allow current and aspiring entrepreneurs to receive certifications in certain career-focused areas at $37-$57 per course. In the past four years, we have taught over 3000 students about financial literacy and entrepreneurship and have assisted over 600 current or aspiring entrepreneurs in starting their business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s hasn’t been a smooth journey. I started to get blackballed at the bank as a branch manager once word got out how successful the conferences were going outside of the bank. My celebrity clients would want me to assist them outside of the bank more. It became personal than professional to my upper management that was also a minority. They wanted me to be something that I wasn’t and remain in a traditional box that God didn’t create me for… so I quit! Lol and here I am
Mastering Entrepreneurship Institute™️ – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The name of the business is Mastering Entrepreneurship Institute that branched from my consulting firm called Lynn Whitney Consulting. We specialize in educating current and aspiring entrepreneurs of all things business to prepare them for the good, the bad, and the ugly of transitioning from the corporate life to the self-employed life that everyone doesn’t discuss.
We are known for assisting startup companies with maintaining profitable income while scaling their business and ensuring that they are uncloned…
We are most proud of our clients in our company. They have trusted us with their babies and we have seen most of them go from $50 in their account to 6 figure income. We are also proud of the students. Some have dropped out of high school and are previous felons and are able to work for themselves now and not hurt for money or anything due to them getting their certifications through MEI.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was quitting my corporate job. It wasn’t about the money, it wasn’t about their hidden agenda towards me… it was the fact that I had a son that I rarely got a chance to spend time with because my corporate job consumed my time.
I had little family time and he needed me. Now I can create my own schedule, volunteer at his school, take him to practice without feeling guilty for missing work.
I am proud to be an involved mother again!
