Today we’d like to introduce you to Melyssa Wiseman.
Hi Melyssa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my career as a bilingual elementary school teacher. I taught 5th grade for 6 years at Houston ISD. I really enjoyed working with children and guiding their learning. My teaching career even allowed me to experience living abroad while teaching in the UAE. During the time I was working as an educator, I was fortunate enough to meet my now husband, Robert Wiseman. He was already working in the real estate industry, and he encouraged me to get my real estate license. I agreed that a real estate license is a great tool to have, even if, at the time, I did not think I would ever leave my teaching career. So, in 2009 I signed up for real estate school and shortly after became a licensed real estate agent. At the time, I was also attending Houston Baptist University in order to obtain my Master’s degree in Educational Administration. Therefore, I did not immediately begin working in real estate full-time and only used my license mainly for personal deals. Fast forward to 2011, Robert began to take on some home renovation projects, and I decided to leave my teaching career to take care of our first daughter and help with our growing real estate business. I began selling some of our renovations and later new construction projects while assisting with the accounting for our new home development business, Wiseman Homes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not always been an easy road. As women, we face many challenges and internal battles. When I became a mother, my biggest challenge was trying to figure out how I would balance being with my kids and yet having enough time to build a career. I made the decision to focus on staying home with my kids for the first few years of each of their lives. It was the best decision I ever made, however when I began getting back to my career full time, I struggled with finding myself again after being lost in “mommyhood”. Many times, I doubted my abilities and felt that others had surpassed me in the working world. It took a lot of inner work and healing to gain my confidence back. It is still something that creeps into my head at times, but the older I get the more experience I gain on how to handle my doubts and overcome them. Another challenge is building a business with your spouse. It is such a beautiful thing to have a family business and be able to work together and share our lives completely. And as many of you may already know, anything that is amazing and worth having always comes with hard work, perseverance, and patience. We have learned many lessons over the years on how to better understand each other and what each of our strengths and weaknesses are. Some years have been really challenging and a time for growth, and others have been smooth sailing. All of these struggles have made me who I am today, and I would not change any of it. Many times, I cried and wondered how I would make it through, but then a new day came with new opportunities, and I became stronger because of it. Without the struggles we would not be able to realize what we are capable of. The challenges also make us that much more appreciative of what we have and what we have worked for.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a real estate agent with eXp Realty. I mostly work inside the loop, Katy, Cypress, and Spring Branch areas. My focus is working with new construction developments and small builders that are looking to brand themselves and market their properties for sale. I also work with buyers looking to begin or grow their real estate portfolio through multi-family residences and first-time home buyers needing guidance with the home buying process. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail on each transaction, my experience with new construction developments, knowledge about available financing options and my willingness to go above and beyond for each one of my clients. My clients know that they can always reach me with any questions they may have, and that goes beyond just the time that we are involved in the transaction. I believe this is why many of my clients choose to work with me again on multiple real estate transactions and also refer their friends and family. I provide my clients with the same level of attention, service, and care that I would want for myself and my family.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My family is originally from Venezuela. My parents moved to Houston when I was very young, but we did not have any family here. Every summer, we would travel to Venezuela for the 3 months of vacation from school to visit our family there. My favorite memories are of being around my cousins, aunts, and grandparents in Venezuela. We would take drives through the mountains to the beach and stop along the way to buy mangoes. Then we sit at the beach all day and just listen to music, play in the waves, and eat mangoes with all our family. Some days, my grandpa would walk with us down to the panaderia and buy us sweet bread. There were always delicious home-cooked meals every day. I learned so much from my aunts and grandparents during that time. Those are memories I will always cherish.
