Meet Tk Tunchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tk Tunchez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been an artist my whole life. I started in the paper medium, making paper dolls at the age of 5 and have never stopped. I’ve has the honor and pleasure of working in multiple mediums (including performance, video, writing, painting & graphic design, sculpture and now mixed metals and flower design). I am in love with a story and the ability of natural elements and colors to heal our communities. I also consider myself a cultural worker, so I work hard to use my art, identity (as a queer, latinx, femme-identified person), and organizing abilities to create pieces (I’m currently making jewelry and flower crowns) and spaces that I hope make people FEEL good about themselves and their communities.

Please tell us about your art.
I am currently a multimedia artist and cultural worker. In my creative practice, Las Ofrendas, I make jewelry/ flower crowns (and headpieces), and graphic design work that is inspired by identity and my desire to make people feel good! I want my work to reflect beauty, attention to detail and inspire people to live their life out loud. I often use Spanish/Spanglish in my work and I love watching people connect with and react to and embrace the ways they see their own identities and Divinity reflected in my work. My work is bright, bold and also, I hope, embodies my relationship to the Divine Feminine (and the powerful and vulnerable pieces I love about the sacred and Divine in all of us).

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Well, as a full-time artist and vendor, I feel pretty excited to live in a time where it seems like folks are investing in local/handmade economies more and more. Cities that offer opportunities for artists to have affordable access to spaces for incubators and/or pop-ups make things so much easier and better for artists. Also, grants and educational opportunities are always wonderful ways to support local artists, makers, and entrepreneurs.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Well, as a cultural worker I organize a series of pop up markets in Austin, Texas called Frida Friday Atx. They are spaces that center self-identified Womyn of Color artists and creatives. You can find my own Las Ofrendas booth there every month! You can also find me at several different pop-ups in Houston including HTX Boss Babes, Artísticas and more. The best ways to support me is by coming out to my events, volunteering to help out when you can, buying my products (!), sharing about me online, and offering collaborations (I love those). Also! You can always find me online – my Instagram and my FB is: Las Ofrendas and you can link to my Etsy here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/lasofrendas.
