Rising Stars: Meet Georgina Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina Key.

Hi Georgina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always written but didn’t consider myself a ‘writer.’ I’ve taught writing for almost 30 years, but my own scribbling was just for myself and the very few people I shared it with. I’m also a voracious reader and love everything about books. But I never dreamed of writing my own, let alone seeing it on the bookshelves of my favorite bookstores. But this journey has been one of the most fulfilling of my life, and I’m 56 years old, proof that it’s never too late!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the biggest challenge has been releasing my debut novel, Shiny Bits In Between, during a worldwide pandemic. Myself and my publisher, Balance of Seven, had set up a live book launch and various readings to promote my book. Obviously, those did not happen. But my virtual book launch in June 2020 was amazing and reached an audience around the world, which would not have been possible normally. Getting my book out there has been hard work. I’ve been very active on social media, and the restrictions of Covid have encouraged me to push my creativity regarding marketing, which has actually turned out to be quite fun. But it’s engaging directly with my readers and hearing such positive feedback that’s made it all more than worth it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a writer and artist, and Shiny Bits In Between is my debut novel. It follows Dorie, a middle-aged woman who has given up on life and relocates from Houston to the remote community of Bolivar Peninsula on the Texas Gulf Coast. Here she plans to disappear but ends up being re-awakened by the landscape and locals who call it home. Her transformation continues as she befriends the mysterious artist, Clementine. Both women help each other move forward and become who they were always meant to be.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Determination—my favorite life motto is “where there’s a will, there’s a way!” I’m not afraid to try new things or make changes in my life. And if I fail, I move on and try something else. Everyone told me how difficult it is to get published as a ‘new’ writer. But I believed in my work and took the necessary steps to network: attending writer conferences and workshops, pitching to agents, and sending queries to publishers. And now, here I am, a published author. Life is short—you just have to go for it!
