Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Williams, RDH, BSDH, MHA
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. At the age of 9 years old, I knew I wanted a career in the dental industry. Once I graduated high school, I attended college at the University of Texas at San Antonio to complete my prerequisites for the dental hygiene program. I applied to my dream school, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and was 1 of 30 applicants to get accepted. As the youngest person in my program, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2013. After graduating, I began working as a Registered Dental Hygienist, and in early 2015, I decided to start my journey as a traveling dental hygienist. I began practicing in multiple offices across several cities. In late 2015, I started my master’s program. While getting my master’s and working as a traveling hygienist, I also began my influencer journey and started collaborating with medical apparel and oral health companies as a brand ambassador. In mid-2017, I graduated with my Master’s in Health Administration. In 2018, I landed a career as a clinical educator and public speaker with a top dental manufacturing company. After 6 months of working in that role, I was promoted and began managing a team of dental hygienists across 4 different states. My role with the company gave me the opportunity to travel across the country and also allowed me to use the management and administrative skills that I gained in my master’s program. As I worked in that management role, I continued working clinically with patients and I still collaborated with brands as a brand ambassador and social media influencer. In March of 2020, when the pandemic hit, dental offices shut down and my work as a traveling dental hygienist came to a screeching halt. However, my social media following grew dramatically during the pandemic and my work as an influencer tripled, leading me to where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At the very beginning of my career, I struggled to find a work-life balance. I had a habit of taking on too many tasks at once. I felt overworked and was on the verge of experiencing burnout. Now, I’ve learned to set boundaries and prioritize self-care. As a result, I’m able to work more effectively at accomplishing my goals!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love what I do as a content creator and social media influencer. I am mostly known for my informative dental health videos on my @JasmineRDH TikTok account. In mid-March of 2020, I joined TikTok and uploaded my first video. Within a few weeks of creating on the platform, one of my videos went viral overnight with over 2 million views. It was even featured on MTV. From there my platform grew rapidly and I currently have over 500,000 amazing followers on TikTok. As my following on social media increased, my influence on social media also got larger. Major brands began to notice my content and started to reach out to me for partnerships. Although I’ve been an influencer since 2016, this year I’ve decided to take it more seriously, as a career, instead of a hobby, as more companies began to contact me for collaborations. As of today, I’ve been able to partner with some amazing oral health care brands, including Oral-B and Crest, who’s products I’ve used and recommended for years to my patients as a dental professional. I’ve even been able to branch out into the beauty industry and create my own custom lip gloss “I’m GorJAS” which launched in July of 2020. I am most proud of the amount of people that I have been able to help and educate all over the world about oral health through my platform. What sets me apart from others is my ability to relay important health information through dance, comedy, and many other fun, trendy, and creative ways.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor is to use social media! Chances are, there is someone on social media that is successful in the industry that you are interested in. When I began my journey in the dental field, social media wasn’t as popular as it is now. I did not have a mentor and I learned many things through trial and error. Since, I didn’t have a mentor, I always knew that I wanted to be a mentor to others. I currently offer mentoring to high school students and adults who are interested in a career in the dental industry. I also offer 1-on-1 coaching to those who are seeking a career change, want to add additional streams of income, or who are interested in becoming more involved in social media as a content creator and influencer. I have also written several informative e-books to share my knowledge and help others.
