Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Amador.
Ana, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started painting when I was in my sophomore year of high school, to cope with the fact I had just moved to Houston from Jacksonville, Fl. I didn’t have many friends so in my free time I would doodle everywhere I could and cut up magazines for collages. During this time, my older cousin and his friends were in a band together so I was always around music and that kind of went hand in hand with the doodles and collages I was making at the time. It was basically like my inspiration at the time. Music became such a big part of my life after moving to Houston and seeing how many people created music. I started finding inspiration in everything I was seeing, hearing and learning. And it has remained that way ever since. I’ve always been so intrigued by seeing others create and play music. I enjoy seeing the connection between art and music. without one you don’t have the other. I honestly don’t think I would have continued to create art if music wouldn’t have been such a big part of my life.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I play around with every medium. I feel like I have the tendency to get bored with things easily so I am always looking to learn new ways to create something. I feel the most comfortable with making multimedia collages and working with acrylics on wood and canvas. In addition to that I make handmade jewelry pieces (earrings/necklaces), I work with resin, polymer clay, I do stitched pieces on fabric, I make pins from scratch, and do some oil painted pieces, as well as watercolor on occasions. In December of last year, I decided to create an art and music festival called Magnolia Park Art Fest. I always say that that festival is my biggest art piece yet. I book several bands, vendors, and artist and bring them all together for an all-day festival. It is what I’m most proud of in my life so far because I had a vision of something, I wanted to create to bring people together and to inspire one another while also having an opportunity to show case their talents and network with other people who also create and support one another and I’ve done it. It’s so beautiful and overwhelming to see so many artists, vendors, bands, musicians, DJs, producers, photographers, and the community all come together to support one another. I wanted the festival to be a collage of culture, local music and art, food, and everything in between.
I’ve always said that I’m a collage of everything and everyone I’ve ever met in life, everything I’ve seen and emotions I’ve felt and I’ve always wanted that to reflect in everything I do. whether it be the festival or my personal art I create. I want people to look at my art or go to my festival and feel at home. My family, especially my parents have always been so supportive of everything I’ve created even if they didn’t quite understand it and I want all the other artist to feel that way, like we are a family of local artist and creators who there for one another and ready to support each other.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Money comes and goes. just like everything in life, there’s going to be good times and bad times but the bad times won’t last. you just have to try to push through whether you are wanting to create art pieces or start a festival, you just have to work with what you can get or what you have. even if that means recycling old art pieces or going straight to the clearance section at Michaels or hobby lobby. Art isn’t an easy path to take but it is worth the struggle when you’re doing something you love.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
people can find my personal art on Instagram as @amadorrrrrr or people can follow my festival on facebook.com/magnoliaparkartfest or on Instagram as @magnoliaparkartfest where I update on events I’m doing as well as other events going on in our local Houston scene. I do local pop-ups at events here and there as well as sell my art at my festivals.
