Today we’d like to introduce you to David Branson.
David, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always loved art, from an early age I loved to color and draw like any kid does, but I never grew out of it. I remember getting up into my teenage years my parents would get so annoyed that I would draw on my jeans and the back of my hands. I enjoyed drawing but was never that great at it. My dad and grandfather had both enjoyed photography, so one year for Christmas my dad got me my first DSLR camera. I was thrilled! I started taking pictures and quickly realized I had finally found my favorite art medium. The creative aspect of my photography didn’t come about for a few years after that when I discovered long exposures, that really opened up the creative possibilities for me, from a lit up pier to light painting with sparklers and glow sticks, I was amazed what I could create with a camera and 15 seconds.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create art through the lens of a camera, from interesting angles and painting with light instead of a paintbrush. Photography is a good way to really explore the world around us and see it differently from everyone else, which is a big inspiration for me. One thing I hope people take away from my work is that art is what you make it, it’s all around you, and its different for everyone.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Given everything that is going on today, I think life has become harder for artists, at least in my industry. With the cameras in phones becoming better and the nicer cameras becoming more and more accessible, it has been getting harder for artists to really stand out and be appreciated, today its all about getting that great Instagram selfy, and double tap and keep scrolling. One thing that I feel that our city can do is have more open art exhibitions, but not just for street art, but for all art, really giving people the chance to display their talents and have them appreciated.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
The best place to see what I do is on my Instagram and Facebook page
