Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Juarez.
Gwen, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I became interested in photography in 9th grade. It was a hobby of both my parents and my sister, but I just wasn’t interested at first. I attended a brand-new high school and all of the clubs and organizations were just getting started. A friend dragged me to a Yearbook/Newspaper meeting. The faculty sponsor told us he was looking for photographers and I told him I could shoot. I had never used a real camera in my life! When I got home from school, I told my parents I was going to be a photographer for the yearbook and newspaper. They nearly went ballistic! They gave me a crash course that night and sent me to school the next day with a camera around my neck.
I majored in music in college and made a living as a musician for many years, but always kept up with photography as a hobby. A friend was looking at my photos one day and loved them. She suggested that I take a course in portrait photography to supplement my income. So, I did, plus courses in landscape, family, macro, low light photography, etc.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a photographer and musician. I don’t specialize in one type of photography or music because I love shooting and playing all styles. I don’t shoot photos to make a social statement or make people think deep thoughts. I just hope my photos and my music bring joy to others. There’s not enough joy in this world. You don’t have to be a member of a certain political party or religion to enjoy my art. I just hopes it can be a kind of common ground.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
If you have a passion for any kind of art, don’t wait to get started honing your craft. Find the time somehow to learn more and create. Perseverance is the key!
