Art & Life with Justin Schwartfigure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Schwartfigure.

Justin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always been infatuated with cameras. Ever since I was 14 years old I’ve been taking pictures. It was always exciting to me when I was able to use a throwaway Polaroid camera and develop the photos months later to view what I’ve captured. Over time I began to show my prints to family and friends, who in return have motivated me to pursue photography.

In 2013 I studied Multimedia Graphic Design in Erie, Pennsylvania and took a Digital Photography class that heightened my interest in professional photography. I’ve gained substantial knowledge in the history of photography, different capture techniques, proper ways to print, the hardware being used, and the proper editing software to make your images pop. It opened my eyes up to a whole new world of job opportunities as well.

Just to name a few gigs after finishing up school:

  • Senior pictures
    • Wedding photography
    • Real estate headshots
    • Location-specific photography for advertising
    • Award ceremonies
    • Product photography for several companies
    • Local artists and concerts

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Around 2017, I gravitated towards my own style: black and white macro and landscape photography. I like capturing details and angles that people wouldn’t normally see. With my editing, I can transform a simple picture of a tiny rock into a large-scale canvas that magnifies all the textures normally unseen by the naked eye. Houston is my new home and I’m continuously amazed how much this city has to offer. The food, the art, and the culture, are endless opportunities ready to be captured with my lens.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
It’s not always easy finding a photography related job without challenges. Pursuing anything that you are passionate about takes time and resilience. Always focus on bettering yourself and heightening your skillsets. You never know when you’ll get your breakthrough opportunity.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My plan for the last quarter of 2018 is to set up shop at the local pop-up markets, selling black and white canvases of some of the most famous landmarks in Houston, TX. A long-term goal is to start my own online store where you can directly purchase digital downloads and canvas prints.
