Art & Life with Marc The Protégé

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc The Protégé.

Marc, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Well, I’ve been writing lyrics since I was about 12 years old but never knew anything about song structure. Growing up in the small towns of Rosenberg and Richmond, Texas, we never really had guidance in the music field. Things began to change when I was introduced to my partner in crime DJ Grim at a mutual friends party. Grim was running his own studio in Houston and saw something in me that no one else did. He took me under his wing and taught me everything about making a complete song. I didn’t start releasing music as a career till about 2014, but it wasn’t until 2016 when I started seeing a real progression for me. I dropped a few songs that led up to my debut album, “Scribbles Upon A Canvas.” With that I built love from some genuine supporters, performing gigs all around Houston and other areas. I am currently in the process of releasing new music for 2019.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The best way to explain the message and style in my music goes along with my rap name, Marc The Protégé. I’m a protégé of all types of hip-hop, so I like to blend all styles I loved listening to growing up and create my own out of it. I love creating on all different types of production, from southern hip-hop, trap, or even boom bap, I write to whatever the mood calls for. On my album “Scribbles” I wrote it as a short story from beginning to end, so I have a huge love for storytelling. A lot of my writing is from a personal point of view, and if it happens to relate to someone, it’s a bonus. But every now and then it’s fun to let loose and have fun with my writing in regards to just making a not so personal track, fun songs. You might run across YouTube videos of me just rapping metaphors for the sport of it. It’s all for my love of hip-hop and my versatility. As far as the message I’m a protege of life. I believe we all are. Every day I am constantly learning something new about this life. Learning about myself, those around me, and this world. As far as now, music is the only thing I’ve ever been great at. It’s been there for me when I felt no one could understand me as a person. It’s my biggest form of expression, and expression kills any bad vibes. Performing on stage is so therapeutic for me. I honestly don’t know what I would do without it.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
As far as advice I say just stay performing and interacting with crowds. Do great promo on social media, it’s easier to build on there but don’t let that take away from in-person human interaction. Those are the most loyal followers. Always take care of those behind the scenes whether it be in payment or gratitude. Do not let their help go unnoticed. When you’re down and in need of getting your career back up, they remember how bad they were treated doing free work for you and got nothing out of it. Another thing is if I could’ve learned something, I would’ve learned how to audio engineer myself and make beats. Those two things are my where most of my money goes to when it comes to music. It would’ve been such a relief for me to just solely invest in videos, merch, and promo. And always never forget your love for the music and why you do it. It’ll help on the bad days.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can always search up Marc The Protégé on all streaming platforms and YouTube, and you’ll find all my music. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc., it’s all there. If you like what you hear share it. Share it and tag me in your post. Share to a peer off social media if you prefer it that way however you like as long as you spread that energy. The best way to support outside of giving the music a listen is to check out any show I’ll be performing at. If you like what you hear come see it live. I always post events I perform at on all my social media platforms so give those a follow in the links provided.
