Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulina Mendoza Valdez.
Paulina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in Mexico, but I’ve been living here in the US for over half my life now. I’ve been in Houston for one year exactly, and I’ve fallen in love with the city already. There’s so many opportunities and talented people, hungry for a creative outlet. I’m fortunate to have made very talented friends willing to collaborate with me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love stories. Most of my work is about made up characters inspired from conversations, books, or simple events I’ve seen happen.
I love photography, but I feel like it can be very dramatic in the sense that it shows as the primary snap moment. I’m moving onto video because it gives you a wider glance at what is really going on in the stories I create, but without giving too much context allowing people to create their own.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I love what has happened to Art in recent years. Art is not as elitist anymore, art is more accessible and open. Of course it has created a bigger sea of competition, but it has also created more available resources to collaborate with fellow creatives, and do bigger, better, bolder work.
There’s a lot of very exciting experimentation with technology in every medium now. I can only see art becoming a way of life in the future, rather than a luxury.

Right now I’m in the planning stages of collaborating on some projects. Most of my work can be found on Instagram under @LuzArchives.
