Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Pham.
Rebecca, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Growing up I always had the biggest sweet tooth. I think I get it from my mom and my grandma. I loved baking and cake decorating pretty much all my life, watching cake shows and trying out different recipes for fun with my sister as kids. I was really creative growing up, at different points of my childhood wanting to be an artist and a fashion designer. For many years from high school through college, I did not do quite as much baking, but after graduating from college, I had one day come across tons of cake decorating videos on Instagram, and I would watch them religiously thinking “I can totally do this!”.
After a few months of getting almost obsessed with watching cake decorating, I decided to try myself! I bought a ton of cake decorating supplies and watched tons of videos online teaching myself different techniques. I spent months and months developing my skills. I wasn’t always good at it, and there was a lot of trial and error, but eventually, it started feeling natural to me, and I started feeling confident in my abilities. It was so fun, and I could see myself doing this for the long-run. That’s when I decided I would make a business out of it. I always had in my mind that I would eventually have my own business after I spent many years working in the corporate world, but I never imagined that I would already have my own business now! I just went for it and decided that I would just try it out more like a hobby thing to make a little money on the side. After a couple of months, my little business started growing a lot quicker than I expected and I was making so many connections within the wedding and events industry. My skills and my business are still growing, but it’s been a dream come true how quickly it grew to what it is today, and I am so excited for the future!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create custom cakes, cookies, and dessert bars. My style is very soft and romantic with a focus on textures and florals. I treat my desserts like little pieces of art and spend time creating the design and bringing it to life in a way that represents my aesthetic and style. When it comes to cakes, I especially love playing with new textures and color palettes. The cake is the canvas, and I am able to use buttercream and fondant to make fun designs.
Besides making sure that my desserts look pretty, I also make sure that everything I create also tastes amazing. I developed my flavors to be light and not too sweet. I want people to be able to enjoy a lot of my desserts without getting sick of it. I have previously come across beautiful cakes that were way too sweet or lacked flavor, and I never wanted that experience with my cakes. If you’re going to cut up a piece of art, it better be eaten and worth every calorie!
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
With all of the social media platforms we have today, it has made it easier for artists to get their work out there and reach people that we may not have been able to with traditional marketing. With that being said, it is also harder to stand out because it has become so saturated with talent. I think if you can be unique and creative, then using those social media platforms can be a huge advantage to get your name out there and set trends.
I think cities can help artists thrive my creating hubs in the city that provide affordable workspaces and a supportive community. I see this happen in Houston already in the arts district and I think it’s great! Creating affordable places for artists to rent out and work closely with each other fosters a supportive community that motivates artists to keep creating. It also makes it easier to host events to showcase their art to the community.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I share my work mainly on Instagram and my website. Social media is where I have been able to share what I do and find other talented people in the local wedding and events community and all over the world. People can support my work by following my social media and of course, ordering my desserts!
