Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Garcia.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Art has been always in me, but I never ever thought sculpture would be my passion. Since early age I draw, painted, made 3D pieces with soap, I had a lot of fun, but when I knew sculpture for the first time at the university in Buenos Aires (Argentina), I thought “this is my thing”, For me sculpture is the most fun art among the other disciplines with all due respect. I just see that something that I never thought to be in my life, suddenly becomes the best I have.
Please tell us about your art. What do you do / make / create? How? Why? What’s the message or inspiration, what do you hope people take away from it? What should we know about your artwork?
So many questions! But the main answer is that I work with metal, that changes everything! I am a woman working with a medium dominated by men for centuries; that’s an everyday challenge, starting with the physical demands of this work; however, my pieces look light or fragile, not like they are going to break, but somehow, they aren’t bulky. Most of them have an abstract look, but they really represent the importance I give to the content, simplifying figuration and magnifying thoughts, which is very challenging when you are working with metal. I enjoy very much the benefits of industrial welding using raw steel; when I color, I apply patinas or paints, paste, wax, etc. When I create I also investigate the role of art in provoking social awareness; I use parody and abstraction for cultural references. I want my sculptures become a mirror where people can see projections of their own reality, generating an unforgettable moment for the observer right in front of my piece.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I don’t think it is a lonely life at all. The artist community is bigger and bigger every day. In Miami there are thousands of events related to art, unfortunately, many of them are secondary going along with parties. However, even this way, there is always a chance to meet artists who know other artists and so on. I know many artists and still there are many more to know.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
