Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Graves.
Drew, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
As a kid, I grew up playing outside all day skateboarding and riding BMX. I spent most of my time in school sleeping or drawing doodles around the edge of my notes to make school tolerable. I didn’t actually start taking my art seriously until I realized that it was a way for me to meditate and find some peace. I have always had a great appreciation and fascination for nature, wildlife, and the Cosmo and I think that is pretty evident in my work.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is mostly pen and ink on paper. I really enjoy the mountains and stars so a lot of what I do incorporates those elements. I use art as a way to be in the present. I breathe deeply, try to relax and let my mind wander. I hope that my art inspires people to go outside and really appreciate what Nature provides us. The world is so beautiful but most of the time people are too busy looking at their phones to see what’s right in front of them. I hope that my art reminds them to get back to nature, live in the moment and realize how lucky we are to be alive.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
I think it’s really important to take time out of your day to be creative. You gotta make time even if it means waking up early or staying up late to create something. Don’t worry about having the best pens or art supplies just create! You don’t have to spend any money to be creative and make something beautiful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
