Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Khoury.
Nicholas, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve been doodling as long as I can remember. It’s always been a natural form of expression for me. As a child I would draw characters from my favorite TV shows and video games in humorous situations. I often doodled in class instead of paying attention.
When it came to choosing a college, it was obvious to me that the only career I would be happy doing for the rest of my life was some form of visual design … I just didn’t know which specific field. I went to SCAD majoring in Illustration with the hopes of being a concept artist for video games. At SCAD they push you to find your own style and build both your technical and conceptual abilities. A lot changed in four years; my art became more minimal and stylized, and I was able to experiment with different mediums. I’ve also always had a strong support system, and I believe that the positive and honest feedback from my family and friends throughout my life has played a major role in my creative development and success.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I don’t even know where to begin, because I do a little of everything. I just love to create. I’m not necessarily bound by a specific style or media. I like both digital and traditional media and love to experiment with how I can combine the two.
Recently, I’ve been doing more painting, which is funny because I have always avoided painting. I have been painting and selling pet portraits, and was recently commissioned to paint a 6’x10’ mural inside the Bank of America building in downtown Austin for a rapidly growing tech start-up, Rubrik. I’m definitely not a niche artist. I also enjoy graphic design, specifically branding and logo design.
Though my message and medium changes, I generally like doing work that’s light, fun and easy to understand, clever and humorous. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to actually make a point sometimes. All I can hope is that no matter what I create, my work is able to stimulate my audience.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Honestly, this is a constant struggle for me and countless other artists. As an artist you shouldn’t let your financial success determine your overall success. Just keep creating. You got to flex your art muscles every day! Even if you’re not making money from your art, keep putting in the time to grow your skills, stay active and social, because it’s all about who you know, and keep your career goals at the forefront of everything you do, and the rest will come naturally.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be viewed on my Instagram (@njkillustration) and my website www.njkillustration.com. People can support my work by just enjoying it. For inquiries about purchasing prints or commissioning work, just shoot me an email and we can start a dialogue. I’m open to new creative opportunities.
