Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvee Hossain.
Hi Alvee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Alvee and I am a photographer and graphic designer. Since childhood, I was always interested in visual arts, whether it was sketching or painting. In 8th grade, I took a desktop publishing class and I fell in love with graphic design. I would spend all day messing around in Photoshop, improving my skills and trying out new ideas. This eventually led me to an internship with the Athletics department while attending the University of Houston. I would help design & create all sorts of graphics, such as posters, cards, banners, and more. I had also recently gotten my first DSLR camera and had a new interest in photography. I texted my boss if I could take some photos at a game and she said yes.
Soon, I was down on the basketball court or the football field taking photos of the games. I knew I had some cool stuff but I also knew that a lot of it would go unseen. On my 19th birthday, with some encouragement from a close friend, I created Alvee Houston Media (@alveehouston). This was an Instagram account where I started to post my designs & photos from the internship. Since then, the page and I have evolved in many ways. I graduated with a degree in Computer Information Systems and work as an Implementation Consultant, neither of which has anything to do with graphic design or photography. But every weekend or so, Alvee Houston Media returns with something new, born out of my need to be creative and try something new.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. There were plenty of times that I thought about if I wanted to keep going or if I even knew where I was going. For my first couple of years, I was dependent on what others wanted. I had a very successful 2018 and 2019 with sports games, club events, and photo shoots. When the pandemic came, I no longer had anybody to collaborate with, it was just me. I had to decide on what I wanted to do next and figure out how to do it myself. This time became a great experience where I learned new ways to be creative and eventually found where I was going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist by hobby, and I mainly specialize in photography and graphic design. It’s hard to say what I’m most known for, but if I had to guess, it would be a series called Stereoscopic Drops that I had from 2018-2020. This was a series of posts where I would create a frame-by-frame sequence of photos I took during shoots to give the illusion of a moving picture. This effectively ended during the pandemic, but friends continue to ask me when I’ll bring them back. I do plan on bringing them back one day, I’m just honestly not sure when. It’s also hard to say what I’m most proud of, but for now, I’ll say the photoshoots I gave myself in the summer of 2020. This began my mentality of “I can do it myself” and started a new wave of creativity for my shots. As cliche as it sounds, the thing that sets me apart is that it’s me. My page is the only place to see what I see and what I imagine, as is any other creator’s page with their content. If you’re interested in seeing the artistic mind of Alvee, then this is the place to be.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
For sure. The biggest lesson I learned was that I needed to have self-purpose and not be solely dependent on others. I shouldn’t have to wait for someone else to want something for me to be creative. I should be able to be creative if and when I want.
