Check Out Ariel Wyatt’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Wyatt.

Hi Ariel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX. When I was a baby my great aunt, Bessie, told my mom that I was gonna be a tough woman because I slept with my hands in fists. I’ve always been the type of person that marches to the beat of my own drum. One day, I remember telling my mom and dad, “I’m going to go to art school!” They weren’t enthusiastic about the idea. But we came to a compromise when I got a B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M’s College of Liberal Arts. I’m not here to make college sound like a cakewalk for me. It wasn’t. You would think a whole degree would open up some doors, no, I had to knock down every single last one of them. In 2018, I started On She Grows which started as a plantagram and blossomed into a small business. My love for plants helped me connect with others. Which made me want to develop On She Grows into something more. That’s when I started knitting beanies and selling them. I wear many hats these days, I am an educator, small business owner and fiancé.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life has been kind to me in many respects, however, I’ve had to work very hard for everything that I have. I have great parents and a supportive partner but it hasn’t always been that way. I’m finding that you can have several aspects of your life down to a tee and then something will come unglued just because.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I’m not embracing my creative side, I’m a teacher. I started off working with special needs children and then I found myself in the education system. My favorite part of teaching is when a student writes you a note or pulls you aside just to tell you how much you mean to them. That’s when you know you’re doing your job right. This will be my second year of teaching and this fall I’m teaching Biology. I am most proud of the fact that I love my career. I think that sets me apart from others. I feel like people rarely love their jobs anymore, it’s all about the money. I’m not a teacher because it makes me rich. I’m a teacher because it makes a difference. I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for those teachers who showed up day after day for me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think I’m still trying to figure out what matters to me the most. At the moment, it’s having a fulfilling life. I try to remember that people may not recall what you did or said but they will always remember how you made them feel.
