Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Unruly.
Hi Charlie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My official transition from a regular job to my art journey started in late 2018. Initially, I was selling artwork to friends who had gatherings or just moved into a new place. Soon after I started attending pop-ups and created an LLC to both sell my artwork and throw my own art-curated events around the city. Gradually over time I added the role of curator to visual artist and began bringing other artists with similar aspirations together. It’s great to have your own hustle and work ethic but when there are like-minded individuals working together, everyone can get further. At this point that is my goal as an artist/curator.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t exactly been smooth, but nothing genuinely worth pursuing is. It takes real effort and a delusional level of dedication to whatever you are passionate about to truly be successful. There will always be obstacles. There will be plenty of things that can and will go wrong. That’s where flexibility comes into play. I tell people all the time that when you first pursue something you desire, the universe gives you two reactions. A first reaction is a form of support or validation that you are on the right path. The second reaction comes in some form of wall or obstacle, maybe even a failure that will test you and make you really consider what you want. This can happen in almost any endeavor but especially in pursuit of a non-traditional path.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At heart, I’m just an artist. I love to conceptualize, create, draw and paint. The entire process of creation is incredible to me and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my time.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I haven’t been blessed enough to have a mentor but I do receive tremendous support from my local community and all over the world. My goal has always been to inspire as many people as I can and encourage everyone to be a part of some form of creation or art appreciation. The support from peers is amazing as well. Fellow artists and creatives enhance the overall experience by giving insight, sharing resources, or even just showing up. Honestly, support could be as simple as spreading the word of excellent service or reposting an ad from a business you appreciate.
