Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Adams.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started many years ago when I first saw a video on YouTube of Julia M. Usher decorating sugar cookies using chocolate and royal icing. I was intrigued by her expertise and the unique way she was able to make such intricate designs. However, at the time I was unable to dedicate the time and energy needed to explore this newfound hobby.
So, if we fast forward several years to 2020, I became a first-time mom right in the middle of the beginning of the pandemic. Within a few months, my husband and I decided that it would be best for me to leave my current job to be a stay-at-home mom.
I had worked for over 8 years in the field of radioactive medicine at a large hospital in Houston’s medical center. It was an amazing experience to converse with patients from all over the world, and to hear their life stories as I did my part to help them improve their health.
Therefore, after my retirement from secular work, I looked for something to be my creative outlet and to keep my brain sharp. It was at this time that I turned my attention to decorating sugar cookies and I have not looked back since!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The whole cookie process has included a lot of trial and error for me personally. Everything from making cookie recipes from scratch to figuring out icing consistencies, it’s no easy task. It’s crazy to think but even the weather can affect the outcome of your cookies! It was surprising to find out that even the humidity alone can affect the drying time and finish of some of the cookie designs.
Thus far, I have continued to learn a lot through my own experiences and through many tips and tricks from other cookie decorators. It had been great to share ideas and collaborate on cookie projects.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I particularly specialize in making decorated sugar cookies for many different occasions. However, since it does not have to be a special occasion to enjoy a cookie, I also make themed cookies as well. Really, the goal for me is to make cookies that are enjoyable to look at and that taste great!
Moreover, I do my best to use quality ingredients. This includes using organic, name brand products when at all possible. An example of this includes using actual vanilla bean paste for authentic taste and quality.
What an amazing gift we have been given in our ability to taste good food…especially when it comes to cookies! Most recently, I was excited to come up with a few designs to help build anticipation for the ‘Powerful by Faith!’ Regional Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This program can be accessed virtually on www.JW.org and includes Bible-based talks and videos. It is something that I encourage everyone interested in learning more from the Bible to check it out.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
There is so much to love about Houston. As a city that has a natural love for great food and artistic ability, it is a place I am happy to call home. Especially since combining the two together in cookie form is what I strive to do, as I look to continue to share my cookies with fellow Houstonians.
