Check Out Kara Potts’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Potts.

Kara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a busy mom of 3 teens in Katy and then my life changed. My oldest son was killed in an ATV accident. My daughter soon left for Baylor and I found myself at home with one teenage son. I wanted to make sure my time was spent on things of value so I prayed and asked my missions pastor what he thought I should do. He asked me to go to Brookshire. I have been leading a missions team to Cambodia for the past 12 years and have always loved both local and international missions, but never considered going across I-10 to invest in my neighbors. This started a beautiful journey!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding time is always a struggle no matter what you do or where you are! Time is our most valuable resource and learning to steward that time well is a journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a BS & MS from Baylor University and an MS in Leadership from KU. I taught 5th grade and spent a few years as an asst. principal at an elementary school. Since the birth of my daughter in 2001, I have not worked for pay. Instead, I have had the joy of spending time on local and international missions.

I would say that people know me as a connector of people. After living in Katy for 21 years, I know people! I love to find out about a need and match it with a person willing to meet that need.

Currently, I serve as the Volunteer Coordinator for The Hangar in Brookshire, TX. The Hangar is one of 5 communities served by Eyes On Me, Inc.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think many people think that life ends when you lose a child. I think people are surprised that grief and joy really do coexist. I think many want to believe that they can go on and love their community, serve others and find joy in life after the unspeakable happens.
