Check Out Karen Moser’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Moser.

Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always been an athletic person. I started playing soccer when I was 5 all the way through High School. I also was a swimmer and lifeguard through H.S. and junior college. Before moving to Richmond, TX, from CA in 2011, I was mountain biking and playing soccer, and once in TX the triathlon community gave me what I was missing from my soccer community. In CA, I was an elementary school teacher with a Master’s in Education. When I started doing triathlons, I wanted to learn all I could about the sport. I shared what I was learning, and with the encouragement of friends, I decided to become certified and start officially coaching. In 2019 I became a level 1 USAT coach and since then have also gotten certifications through UESCA – running triathlon and endurance sports nutrition. I have also completed the course by Dr. Stacy Sims, Menopause for Athletes, and Precision Nutrition Level 1. I love sharing my knowledge and experience with my athletes and those just curious about the sport or fitness and nutrition. My goal is to help others reach their goals, whether it’s a PR at a race or general fitness. In 2020 a couple friends and I started Tri Lab Endurance, a triathlon club to bring together athletes and give them a place to ask questions, have a workout buddy, group workouts, and social events.

I have done numerous races, 3 Full Ironmans, 6 Half Ironmans, 2 Half distance Aquabikes, and many Olympic and sprint distance races, I normally finish in the top 5-10% of my AG. I had the privilege of going to UTI Worlds in Denmark in 2018 for Aquabike long distance and competed in USAT nationals in 2019 and getting ready to do so again this August. I also enjoy doing 5Ks to half marathons, but save marathons for when I am doing a full ironman.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been balancing being a mom, wife and growing my business. As a coach, you need to get out in the community, I’m thankful for being an outgoing person and enjoy talking to others, but it is difficult to go to local weekly run and bike rides and getting our girls to their activities. I am hoping this is my year to truly grow my business.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Specializing in female master athletes, as the needs and considerations for training and nutrition can change as individuals age. I Recognize these changes and tailor the plans can make a significant difference in optimizing performance and overall health.

I try and set myself apart from other coaches by continuing my learning of the sport, getting to know my athletes, so I can understand how to develop their training to fit their lifestyle and goals. I make sure to keep open communication with my athletes and make them feel comfortable talking with me. I also love sharing my knowledge and experience with anyone who may have questions. I love that I can coach athletes all over and not just in my community via online platforms. With my local athletes we plan workouts together or in groups. I offer form analysis to all coached athletes.

I look forward to developing a strong community of athletes and helping them reach their goals, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. All my athletes understand that consistency is key, and we all have setbacks, but we continue on. It’s not about missing a workout or not hitting the marks, but what you do the next day and the day after that counts. I want them to understand their workouts and their purpose. Each athlete is different, so their plans will be different, they grow with them as they progress.

My goal is to help all my athletes grow in their training while staying healthy and keeping the love of the sport. I will provide open communication and be a supportive partner in all aspects. By focusing on a comprehensive approach that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional aspects, I provide a well-rounded coaching experience. Helping athletes navigate challenges, maintain motivation, and develop resilience.

I have a passion for working with new athletes that have goals of completing their first race and are ready to achieve them. It is about the journey as much as meeting the end goal. I am building a supportive and encouraging network that provides a sense of camaraderie, motivation, and shared experiences. It’s not just about physical aspects but also about mental and emotional well-being, as these elements play crucial roles in an athlete’s overall success and fulfillment.

I also enjoy being involved with my daughters’ fitness journeys – they both do youth triathlons, and I help coach their team, Tri-Fury. We just wrapped a season with GOTR, that I volunteered as one of their coaches, and as a family we coordinate a national non-profit running series, Healthy Kids Running Series, in the spring and fall. We usually have around 150 kids ages 2-15 participate. We have an amazing sponsor, Good Times Running Co, in Katy, and get amazing volunteers from Texas Beef Team.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Being in fitness was a savior; we were able to be outside continue to work out.
