Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Nicole.
Hi Kyla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Kyla Nicole. I am a Health Scientist who is passionate about health and wellness, specifically as it relates to women of color. I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, where I earned a degree in developmental psychology. My passion has always been medicine and long term. I’d like to have my own women’s clinic. After college, I earned my master’s in education and became a member of Americorps and Teach for America. During this transition, God planted the seed to start podcasting, blogging and documenting my mental health journey and my growth into a new woman. This inspired my brand and encouraged me to apply for further education. During the pandemic, I started public Health school at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. I will complete my master’s in public health in 2023, and this has solidified my service to health and wellness with women. It has birthed my brand and the rebrand of my brand. God has continued to refine my vision as I walk in my purpose.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I always thought I would be a doctor by 27. A lot of sacrifices is required of a young person when medicine is your desire. I have sacrificed a lot to be in Public Health School. I have felt a lot of pressure from being a full-time educator and also a full-time student. I feel like my biggest struggle currently is having enough time to get all of the tasks required of me done. Being an entrepreneur, philanthropist and full-time in a career can be daunting but I ask God to help me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in walking in my purpose. God called me to be a servant of His kingdom through mentorship of adolescents and health and wellness with women. I am a full-time educator and majorette coach at a Charter School on the south side of Chicago. I am also a vessel for peace through movement as I teach mindful movement classes every weekend. I am also a development intern at the Chicago Women’s Health Center. I am different from my peers because I use my professional life to inspire my entrepreneurial life. I have obtained my real estate license and I am currently building a nonprofit organization that will help address the social determinants of health where there is a gap in Chicago specifically related to housing and urban planning. I also am a team lead for a nonprofit organization Beauty and Brains Bloom Mentorship for young ladies. Lastly, my personal brand KYS Goodnight is a one stop shop for women to increase their wellness and health. The tools I have used to build a successful business have come from the skills that I have gained or the things I denied myself while working.
Any big plans?
I am currently changing careers. I have been an educator in both the public and charter school sector for the last 5 years. My goal is to earn my Ph.D. in Maternal Child Epidemiology and continue to make strides in women’s health. I will be continuing to build and roll out my nonprofit organization as well as continue to grow my relationship with God so I can ensure I am walking purposefully. I also plan to break into policy and work on mitigating maternal mortality rates through my nonprofit and personal business. I will change the world.
