Check Out Mindy Ferguson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Ferguson.

Hi Mindy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Southwest Houston and became a committed Christian when I was twenty-six years old. As a new believer in Christ, I immersed myself in the study of God’s Word and my passion for learning eventually led me to begin writing my own Bible studies for women.

I wrote my first study in 2000 and taught that material for several churches in the Houston area. To my surprise, I was also offered a staff position with my home church as Director of Curriculum Development, which gave me the opportunity to write more women’s studies, some children’s curriculum, as well as church-wide devotionals. The following year, I attended a writer’s conference to improve my writing and learn some speaking techniques. I not only learned some badly needed writing and speaking skills, but I also met editors from Christian publishing houses, with whom I shared my material. From those meetings, my first Bible study was published by Hensley Publishing, and I was also contracted to write Bible Reflections for Women as part of the Hugs Series, published by Howard Books. It was an exciting time filled with growth and new opportunities. I continued to write and teach and began speaking for women’s events, which was completely out of my comfort zone at the time, but by God’s grace and empowerment, I continued to grow my writing and speaking ministry. A few years later, I attended another writer’s conference where I met with an editor from AMG Publishers. That meeting led to a contract to publish the Eyewitness Bible Study series. The studies in the series include: Peter: Eyewitness to Majesty was published in 2013, Moses: Eyewitness to Glory was published in 2014, Abraham: Eyewitness to Promise was published in 2016, and I just signed a contract to publish the next study in the series—Ruth: Eyewitness to Redemption, with an expected release date of April 2023.

To continue learning and growing, I enrolled in seminary in 2015 and graduated with a Master of Theological Studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 2020. I am currently on staff at Fairfield Baptist Church in Cypress, Texas as Women’s Ministry Director and continue to write, teach, and speak at women’s events as God provides opportunity. It has been an exciting journey and I look forward to seeing what God has planned in the future.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. In fact, my first Bible study publisher went out of business a few years after publishing my material. In addition, Howard Books, which had contracted me to write Bible Reflections for Women, was acquired the year after the devotional was released, and the series was canceled. Those were challenges I certainly never anticipated. However, I kept prayerfully seeking opportunities to write and speak and God has faithfully continued to provide opportunities. For that, I am incredibly thankful.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My passion is to help women learn to apply and abide in God’s Word, every day. I desire to write in such a way that the stories in Scripture come to life and the principles of God’s Word become relevant to the situations women face as they go through their ordinary routines—real, raising-kids, paying-the-bills, and navigating-the-workplace stuff of life. I don’t want women to just know the Bible, I want them to know the God who authored the Scriptures. That is the goal with which I write and speak. A deeper relationship with their Creator is what I pray women gain when they participate in one of my events or read one of my studies.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice to women seeking to meet their God-given potential is to prayerfully take risks, be intentional about the way you spend your time, have integrity in all your dealings, and, if you are married, work with your spouse to make time for the things that are important. Regardless the obstacles and challenges, trust God to lead you along the path He has for you.

I haven’t really sought out networking and I didn’t ever have an official mentor. I just strive to learn from others. I read a lot, I seek to have authentic relationships, and I pour into others when I can. I trust God with the rest.
