Check Out Nassir Joseph’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nassir Joseph.

Hi Nassir, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an African American artist that got his start in New Orleans, Louisiana! I grew up around the art of all kinds, and that captivated me at a young age. I’ve been making art since I was six years old and am still at it 20 years later. I prefer to make very colorful pieces that catch someone’s eye as soon as they walk near them. My pieces all depict what I cannot verbally say. Most ideas that come out on paper or canvas tend to be difficult for me to explain. I try to make their meanings as straightforward as possible while including small details that are very personal to what I may be going through at the time. My inspiration mainly comes from anime and comic books. I love the ways those artists can capture an entire story in one or two pages! The thing that drives me the most is my want to further improve my skill. That drive has made me explore media that I never did before. It even led me down the road of mastering my difficult paint to use in the world, watercolor!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had a lot of trouble finding the medium that stuck out the most. I tried my hardest to be good at colored pencils and markers. I could never learn to use them properly so I picked up acrylic. I used that for about twelve years until I hit my senior year in college. I had to make a series in which I could use whatever medium I wanted, and I forced myself to get good at watercolor. Now I only use watercolor in my pieces. I also tried for years to make digital art, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I actually learned how to make it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for making extremely colorful pieces! All of them look like pages ripped from a comic book. I am most proud of the fact that I kept up with my art because I wanted to give up a few years ago. I learned that art is the only thing that truly makes me happy. I always have a huge smile on my face when I see my finished products.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Wow, there are too many to choose one. I can say one of my favorite ones was playing with Digimon cards. My cousin John and I used to create our own games. We’d get all our cards and spread them out in a circle around us in the kitchen. We never knew what we were doing but we always had a blast!
