Check Out Dr. Ruth Wintz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Wintz.

Hi Dr. Wintz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been in practice for almost 20 years. I practice Nephrology, which is medical kidney disease. I love to get to know my patients and keep them healthy over the years. When we cannot prevent kidney failure, I coach the patients through dialysis as a bridge to kidney transplant if at all possible. I am a two-time cancer survivor myself. I know that the experience of being on the other side of the white coat, with all its anxiety and uncertainty, has shaped me to be a better doctor and better human.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I was 31 years old when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I was still in school completing my training and had a one-year-old son. It was a very aggressive tumor and I did not think I would survive. I went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I began my medical career wearing a wig to hide my bald head. I used to start the work day off with radiation treatment prior to going to the clinic to treat patients. Not only did I survive, I was given the greenlight by my doctor to have a second child! Surveillance with breast MRI found a second different cancer less than 10 years later. I went through a double mastectomy with reconstruction to reduce the odds of ever having breast cancer again. That was over 10 years ago and it continues to fuel my passion to restore others’ health.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
