Check out Peter Maldonado’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Maldonado.

Peter, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story is a story of redemption. I struggled with drugs and alcohol for approximately 5 years, and now I have been free from all mind-altering substances for over ten years. Not only did I find freedom from the disease of addiction, but it turned into a career and now I get to help addicts find their way to treatment to get another chance at life. And about five years ago, my recovery journey was enhanced by yoga practice. Truly growing mentally, physically, and spiritually.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I guess my art would be networking, connecting people, and being of service through my story. I get to create hope for the hopeless. I get to sit with addicts and their family and let them know that, I too, was once a lost soul and was able to find my way back and be a useful member of society. I personally love using the Instagram platform to share my story and to speak up about the topic of addiction. I realize that not a lot of people like to talk about this, and my hope is that I can help break the stigma around addiction. I blog about my recovery journey and talk about the struggles and success of a recovery journey. I love using yoga as a way to get people’s attention about this important topic.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I feel that art through social media is becoming more accessible and art friendly. I feel like life is becoming easier for artists, yet still very competitive. What can we do as a city? I feel like Houston is such a big city, it’s nice to run into so many creatives around the city. And I’m sure there is already tons of meet ups, personally I don’t feel like I’ve attended many meet ups, besides free outdoor yoga events. I feel like having a creative hangout spot would be cool, or an event.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
