Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Covarrubias.
Sandy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been an artsy person. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been a lover and a dreamer stuck in the clouds. When I was a little girl, I would brush my long black hair and sing to myself in the mirror. My love for art started with music. I learned to play the piano, guitar, and sang in front of many large crowds at the age of 16. I never knew that my passion for music would transition into a new found love in the photography world.
I’m definitely a highly sensitive and emotional person. Many people may find that as a weakness, but not an artist. Many dreams, goals, and visions are birthed through an artist’s emotions. We create art through the very emotions we feel. That is true art in my opinion. I’ve been documenting beautiful memories for so many wonderful people for the last 5 years now. I absolutely adore the idea that by using a camera, we can freeze a moment in time that would otherwise be lost forever.
I enjoy being able to express my creativity through the lens while adding my touch of dreamy magic to every single image.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Photography is an outlet for many people. We use it to document our journeys in life and that is exactly what I do for my clients. From romantic and beautiful weddings, to beach elopements, senior sessions, growing baby bumps, and so much more; I’m a lifestyle photographer who serves the Galveston/Harris County area and am also available for travel.
When a client views their images, I absolutely love that “OMG! They’re beautiful!” response I get. I also love to know my images are hung up perfectly inside their homes. That’s a very amazing and humbling feeling I can’t really describe. If the portrait takes my client back to that moment in time and makes them happy, then I know I’ve done my job right. I want my portraits to bring happiness. Each image has an emotion connected to it. My goal is for you to see it and feel it.
My photography editing style is very “dreamy and magical.” I love adding warm and soft tones to my images which helps bring the image to life. I also assist with posing but I aim to keep my clients comfortable so I love candid moments. That romantic look, that fierce pose, those kiddos running around, that’s real life and I love capturing it!
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Many artists work full-time and practice their art on the side. That’s exactly what I’ve done so don’t give up! If you have a dream then chase it until you’ve reached it. Once you have reached it continue growing and expanding in your knowledge in the industry. Find your style and go with it. I started off with an amateur camera and would photograph my son who was 1 at the time. He was and will always be my greatest inspiration in life. I practiced street photography for a while as well and I fell in love with it.
Being an artist is definitely a journey. It doesn’t come easy and I think every artist can agree with that. I suggest shadowing other photographers you look up to. Practice on different subjects in different lighting and different settings so you can get the feel for what you like to photograph and also so you can understand your camera better. Just remember to never give up and don’t ever let ANYONE steal those dreams from you or take away your shine. If you’re an artist don’t be afraid to let the world see your masterpiece, your creativity, your art. If it speaks to you it will speak to others too.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
