Today we would like to introduce you to Amanda Alarcon-Hunter with Minx and Onyx Vintage. Her story below is inspirational and empowering to all of those who are advocates for sustainability.
Amanda Alarcon-Hunter, Designer, Entrepreneur, Fashion Creative Director for Minx and Onyx Amanda has been in the fashion industry for over 25+ years. She has owned several businesses and continues to design, style and accessorize others on a daily basis. As an artist, her art and design work have always been about empowering the individual. She loves to collaborate with other artists and designers. Amanda has planned and executed fashion shows, events and many philanthropic initiatives. Amanda has a big place in her heart for the environment, therefore Sustainability is her focus. Her approach is to take reclaimed textiles and fast fashion vintage and create them into new re-imagined unique and modern styles for the modern fashionista who is consciously looking for designs and new styles that address the responsibilities of the fashion industry. We want to keep out of landfills and use what is already available. We work and rework and recreate.
I am sure you wouldn’t say the journey has been obstacle free, but would you say it has been a fairly smooth road?
With many years of business and fashion under my belt, the journey has not been that hard. Yes, there have been challenges as with any business, but with my business experience and expertise, I have been able to maneuver through any issues and problems fairly quickly and efficiently. The biggest challenge that we have seen and still work through at this time is social media. I have had to learn so many different platforms and I am still learning what they all bring to the table for businesses like mine. I enjoy the branding and marketing aspects of a fashion business but it’s the time that it takes that can be very challenging for both my husband and I. We are a small business where I work the business full time and my husband part time. We also have several other businesses that we run and several philanthropic organizations that we are a part of. Time can be challenging for both of us. We definitely stay busy and know deep in our hearts that all that we do is for the greater good.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Minx and Onyx?
Our mission statement at Minx and Onyx is to bring you styles of up-cycled and re-purposed products you can feel great about, through a sustainable business model that diverts waste. Our store is designed to transform unusable and unwanted items into stylish styles that are both fashionable and accessible to the everyday market. As fast fashion, and the culture that supports it, continues to take a massive toll on our environment, we recognize and understand the need for strong up cycling programs and or businesses. We also understand the importance of the intention that we owe to our society and environment. We at Minx and Onyx are truly dedicated to collecting, redesigning and making available to you newly recycled designed jewelry and eclectic vintage items.
Amanda Alarcon -Hunter’s creations have blurred the lines between fashion and art for the past two years. Combining carefully selected gemstones with unique settings and materials. Amanda’s work reflects her amazing attention to detail and carefully curated eye for vintage materials. All pieces are handcrafted and one of a kind, as unique as the individual who wears them. Amanda began creating her wearable art for herself and in turn, the artistic drive led to a brand new exploration. Amanda’s works of art have been sold all over the US and many International Countries. Some of her unique jewelry and handbag designs can be found at several museums located in San Antonio, Texas.
Amanda Alarcon-Hunter’s jewelry creations for Minx and Onyx combine vintage jewelry and the modern eye for chic and rare jewelry and handbags. Designer Amanda Hunter searches high and low for the most unique and interesting objects all over the US. Amanda designs and constructs the pieces by herself and they are never not repeated. These items are a one of a kind and named on occasion. Each piece is signed by the artist. Amanda finds that working with older materials inspires her creativity. There are many items out there that need to be put back into circulation and out of the landfills. However, my designs can help the environment and the animals I will create!
What makes you happy?
Happiness what does that mean to me and what makes me happy: To be true to oneself and set out to be different from others. To be individualistic and express your creative side. I have always been an old soul and I have always been my happiest when I am able to express my true being, my true purpose and my vision to make the world a better place. I have always done my very best to help others in as many ways as possible. I am a true Philanthropist, Human Rights Activist and Advocate for all. I created a sustainable business to lead by example that one can be conscious of the environment, of animals, of their health and still be happy. To be happy is not hard to do, one just must simply be and open their hearts to their true nature within.
