Community Highlights: Meet Amber Simpson of Eunoia Wellness Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Simpson.

Hi Amber, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
If you were to ask the barely 18-year-old me where I’d be today, all she knew for sure was something bigger than the small town she grew up in and make a difference in this world. I just knew there was more out there for me. Growing up in a cornfield rural town in Illinois, I knew one thing for sure, that I was excellent at math. So naturally, off to college, I went to major in accounting. I full-blown hated it. Dropped out after a few years knowing I needed to do something else in my core. I obtained my certified nursing assistant to be an ED tech. The opportunity came knocking. I left my home state and headed out west to Reno. My entire life trajectory shifted in that moment. I was off reaching for every next opportunity I could get within the healthcare system and exploring not only different US states, but myself. I landed myself back in college with a purpose – Social Work. Alongside my classroom education was exploration of the world, such as a life-changing 3-week mission trip to Africa, and a working deep dive into professional expansion within the healthcare world. I knew I wanted to have a micro and macro impact for overall wellness (health and mental health). Each role I took within the healthcare arena, felt like a game of chess. A strategic move, followed by the next strategic move that pivoted me to impact more and more individual lives and system procedures. I was able to harness my skills, knowledge, and passion to design and build Social Work programs with healthcare systems, servicing more people in need. Enacting and leading me to where I am today. Transforming and re-imaging my tomorrow’s self from my yesterday’s self. I currently work full time with a healthcare system, where I’ve facilitated the development and implementation of 2 new programs. Yet, introspection of what more can I do is an often occurrence with me and so I opened a private practice – Eunoia Wellness Counseling.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a pleasant first step for me with a “big girl job.” I completed my Bachelor’s in Social Work degree and was just starting my Master’s in Social Work courses when I applied for an After-Hours Emergency Crisis Clinician position. I went to that interview ready to own it and left defeated. I called my then husband at the time crying of how I bombed it, how inadequate I felt and how humbling of the experience it was. Then, I got a call that I got the job. I was stunned. Were they in the same interview as I was?! My supervisor told me at the time she saw something in me and that I was going to be great. Her confidence in me was all that I needed. It ignited a fire within me and within a few months, I was training new hires. The opportunity that I thought I tanked set my entire future up. Empowering me to rock graduate school and giving myself permission to keep building me professionally and personally.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m an LCSW-S (licensed clinical social worker – supervisor) focusing on assisting professionals to achieve quality sleep once and for all through integrative wellness approaches, both traditional and holistic approaches, so they can feel rested, improve their focus, increase energy and be more in control of their life. I also treat anxiety, stress and adjustment as they also influence our sleep. For many people that may look like difficulty falling or staying asleep. Perhaps they have difficulty shutting their brains off, difficulty concentrating, or have brain fog. My role is to help someone take back control to improve their sleep, mood/behaviors, increase cognitive function, and overcome stress/anxiety to achieve optimal health and wellness. I believe one small thing today can make a better tomorrow.

Health is important to me; I mean I’ve made a career in healthcare. The path to overall wellness is my jam. I’m also a CMHIMP – Certified Mental Health Integrative Medical Provider. Meaning I combine traditional approaches like CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), etc with alternative/holistic approaches like yoga and nutrition.

I’m currently offering virtual sessions statewide in Illinois and Texas. I also provide walk-and-talk sessions locally in Houston.

More to come on launching courses for therapists and clients, as well as other new offerings worldwide through my upcoming coaching business – AS Coaching (www.amberscoaching.com)

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Adventurous. The will to undertake new initiatives, and to take risks on the unknown. Each step throughout my professional and personal life has been taking leaps of faith into the unknown with new cities/states, professional career opportunities, exploring the world land and cultures, and betting on me. “Adventure is worthwhile in itself” – Amelia Earhart. I’m continuously cultivating an adventurous rounded life.
