Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Vonderau.
Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been designing for as long as I can remember, so a path in interior design was always clear. After design school, I focused on commercial design for nearly a decade. From office spaces, hospitals, and colleges to health spas, restaurants and bars, and even airport design, I’ve experienced the full spectrum of design. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch my sketches turn into award-winning projects.
Five years ago, I decided to focus on residential design and started Amy Vonderau Interiors. I’ve found the residential design process to be extremely enriching as each project path is unique. There is a certain depth of understanding of how a client lives in their space that drives me. The realities of their everyday movement must be captured within the design.
Getting to know the client at this level is the best part of what I do. Understanding each client’s personality, style and goals make each project unique while our collaboration is the key to producing a product that we both can be proud of.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The transition into the residential world from commercial, well let’s face it, they are two drastically different worlds. Two worlds that I find myself proudly swerving into both lanes more frequently than most designers. This sets me apart from most residential designers as their aesthetics tend to run along the same path.
Admittedly, I found this to be a bit of a struggle thinking I had to have a certain look in order to be a successful residential designer. But, I soon realized my clients were not searching me out for a certain aesthetic but rather my guidance finessing their own.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Amy Vonderau Interiors?
Amy Vonderau Interiors is a full-service interior design firm. I approach each project the same by guiding the client’s vision into reality. Whether it’s quick consultation on how to improve a space, a renovation, or a ground-up construction I feel that mindful design should be approachable to everyone, regardless of budget.
My primary goal is to have my clients proud of the final product and to be confident in their decisions that got us to the final product. Because the reality is, it’s the client that lives in the space, not me.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lessons on my journey have come from my peers and mentors. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for those who helped pave the way and were open enough to share their experiences with me.
Also, I always tell clients repeatedly, “I’m at the mercy of the craftsman.” For every successful project, there is a whole team of craftsmen led by a contractor that worked magic turning my design ideas into reality.
