Community Highlights: Meet Debra Desposito Hume of Deb’s Picnic Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Desposito Hume.

Hi Debra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in New Orleans and became a Houston transplant after hurricane Katrina. Although the hurricane brought much sadness, poverty, and challenges for my family, it was also a time that strengthened my character, values, and family relationships. Growing up with hard challenges daily instilled the importance of hard work and taught me that my accomplishments are a direct result of my own actions, discipline, and commitment to honor those in my life. I worked 3 jobs in college to put myself through Texas A&M and then continued to have 3 jobs post-college. I currently work full time at an HR firm, teach spin classes at Revolution studio, and own a picnic company called Deb’s Picnic Designs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creating a business while still working a full time job is a challenge of time and priorities. My childhood insecurities of stability, health benefits, and security keep me holding onto both jobs. I have listened to countless speakers that advise to take the leap of faith and commit to your company, but I struggle with letting go and managing to maintain both.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
During the pandemic I started the luxury Picnic company due to my love of hosting events, gathering with my best friends, and just being extra in general. This company has brought joy to my life because I am able to witness proposals, special anniversaries, surprise date nights, and even extravagant ways a guy will ask someone to be his girlfriend. There is something magical about witnessing other people express love to those in their lives. The style of my picnics is a mix of modern, classic, and sometimes Boho. I stand out amongst competitors by offering free planning services and extra details such as place cards and menus.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have always been a very big reader so it is hard for me to select my favorite books. A recent book I am reading is I will teach you to be rich and it breaks down finances and makes them digestible for everyone. I find that the power of knowledge can help if you have insecurities with finances or anywhere that you struggle personally in life. A podcast that I feel truly inspires me is called SHE by Jordan Lee Dooley. Jordan talks about how women can thrive in daily life and in business.
