Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessikah and Amber. Them and their team share their story with us below:
J+A Splendid Events LLP was founded by two college friends who met at DePaul University 10 years ago. Their love for yummy foods, cute furry animals, and going on adventures (much like this business venture) bonded them. The two made impacts in their respective communities that created a sense of trust, dependability, and quality. They have experienced living together as roommates, traveling the world together, and now starting a business! This 10+yr friendship created the perfect foundation for a unique and successful business dynamic duo.
Jessikah majored in Marketing, Sales Management & Category Management and went on to manage districts for a top food retail brand which opened her opportunities to acquire her MBA. This eventually led her to relocate to Houston, TX from St.Louis after accepting an offer from a major animal care brand. She has been residing in Houston for the last 4 years with her fur babies Oreo, Jaxx, & Mika. Her favorite activity while living in Houston has been trying new restaurants as often as possible; namely the season’s best crawfish! When she isn’t enjoying the beautiful weather with her dogs she is trying out a new DIY project or plotting her next trip.
Amber majored in Hospitality Management with a focus on Event Planning & Management and has filled several roles within the hospitality industry over the last 10 years. Some of her notable experiences were operating as a Food and Beverage Manager for a top hotel chain along with running an event department for a privately owned event space. Amber’s love of adventure led her to move to Dallas, TX from Chicago. Amber has been living in Dallas for the past 2.5 years along with her turtle Frankie. Although Amber hasn’t gotten to explore Dallas fully due to the Pandemic she enjoys finding hidden gems of food, drinks, and activities with her new friends or solo. Amber describes herself as a homebody who loves movie nights and cuddling up with a book but is always open for a quick (or long) trip.
These two young ladies seem to be very aligned – no wonder their first month of business has been such a success.
When Jessikah brought the idea to Amber about starting an event company it only seemed natural; from there J+A Splendid Events was born! They hit the ground running by finding a name, creating a business model, incorporating their company, sourcing event products, making vendor connections in the community, and eventually created a launch strategy – which took them about 4 months to build from start to finish. J+A Splendid Events offers 3 different event packages tailored to most consumers’ needs along with a luxury picnic line called Splendid Picnics that can accommodate up to 10 guests. They even provide event rentals ranging from Champagne walls to boho chairs along with offering add-on services like day-of coordination or special occasion customized gifting. They service the Greater Houston area, for now, with plans to branch into the Dallas market soon after.
On April 9th the ladies celebrated their business launch by celebrating with close friends and family. Their launch party curation grabbed the attention of neighbors in the area as well as those on social media. They transformed a simple clubhouse into a brown luxury brunch-themed event to include a personal bartender with specialty drinks to custom gift boxes for all their guests. Jessikah & Amber gave everyone a clear idea of how they can transform a simple space into something amazing. Which has afforded them, several new clients, within their first 3 weeks of business.
As expected, the college friends feel overwhelmed with all the love and support shown but also proud of what they were able to curate as a team. They hope to continue working with other vendors in the industry, plan bigger events with unique themes and ideas, and consistently book their luxury picnics for the summer. They pride themselves on curating experiences and they hope to provide that to as many Houston residents and eventually Texas.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We haven’t experienced major challenges *knocks on wood* in our business. However, we have identified at least 3 challenges that we can face if we don’t have proper planning and communication. 1. Living in two different cities. 2. Operating as a team. 3. Taking on entrepreneurship with confidence.
We both understood very early on that we needed to operate as a team to be successful which meant our communication was a PRIORITY. We meet weekly to go over business and constantly stay in contact throughout the week accomplishing tasks on our business list. At any point when one of us is frustrated, overwhelmed, or busy the other can seamlessly take over and provide support. Knowing your business partner is the cheat code to mitigate unnecessary problems. Building a business is challenging enough. Our focus is on having fun and creating unforgettable moments for our clients.
