Today we’d like to introduce you to Mamawah Bourque.
Hi Mamawah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been drawn towards service and science. The medical field intrigued me but I struggled initially to determine which aspect of health care I was drawn to. After weighing the options and reflecting on what elements of health care fit me as a person, I knew being a physical therapist was what I wanted to do. Once I determined my goal, I stayed the course through all the challenges. I completed my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX, then continued to complete my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Texas Woman’s University in Dallas, TX. I got married and started my family during physical therapy school. It was a wild ride, but I’d do it all over again. I feel I am the woman, mother, and therapist I am today because of the grit and tenacity it took to meet the goals I aspired to achieve.
Fast-forward over 10 years later, I have had a successful career in physical therapy providing quality care in administrative and clinical roles. I have worked with individuals after injuries as well as led a team of 20 therapists as a supervisor of therapy services for over 7 years. For the last 2 years, I have focused my area of practice solely on Women’s Health and Pelvic Health issues treating pelvic pain, painful sex, incontinence, pregnancy, post-partum, and a myriad of other pelvic dysfunctions. I obtained specialized training and have an Advanced Certificate in Women’s Health that I obtained from my alma mater Texas Woman’s University (it’s safe to say I love my Alma Mater).
Starting my own practice, “Awareness Pelvic Health”, was a growing desire as I advanced in my understanding of pelvic health conditions. The pandemic lit a fire in me to re-assess how I continued my career as a physical therapist. Pelvic health physical therapy re-lit a passion in me to provide service in this niche area of practice that has minimal resources in the community. Since transitioning to solely providing care in this area of practice, I’ve engulfed myself in learning of pelvic dysfunction so that I could provide impactful care to my clientele. It has been so rewarding to help these individuals and I have found my space as a physical therapist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say the road has been without struggle, because there have been challenges along the way. Overall there have been less hardships than I anticipated. Starting a new endeavor always has its struggles, however, these lessons have paved the way to opportunities I never imagined. Overall, I’m a faith-filled individual and I know God has guided me through this process. I welcome challenges with an open mind and a learning spirit. I see every setback as part of the journey and adjust. I have a strong support system which is a blessing on its own. My husband has been my rock, support and greatest cheerleader. Along with my husband, my entire family, and friends continue to support and encourage me throughout this journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m the doctor you didn’t know existed, to fix problems you never could explain. As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I help people who don’t feel like they “know what’s going on down there” (meaning within or around their pelvis). I help my clients not only understand their bodies better but function better. Awareness Pelvic Health is not your “typical” physical therapy practice. I pride myself in crafting a customized holistic treatment plan specific to my clients’ pelvic rehab needs. My practice is known for treating a myriad of sexual, and pelvic dysfunctions with the whole body in mind. I also help new and expectant mothers adapt to the changes in their bodies.
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialty with only a few practitioners with the skills to provide this type of care within the Greater Houston Area. It is so rewarding to help women and men get function back in their lives. My clients are able to finally go worry-free of having bladder accidents, have a sexual experience without pain, or get a full night’s rest without having to go the restroom. With individual 1 on 1 sessions with me, my clients have the opportunity to express their physical challenges, truly be heard, and get back to some sense of normalcy.
My clients have the opportunity to not only improve their physical function, but work on their mental health if they choose to. I have partnered with Dr. Viviana Coles and her Associates for access to marriage, family and sex therapy. Dr. Coles is a Marriage, Family & Sex Therapist, and a relationship expert on the Lifetime TV show “Married at First Sight”. Addressing both physical and mental parts of these issues can result in balanced long-term healing.
You can find me in the Greater Heights at Houston Relationship Therapy for individualized care tailored for you.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
With risk comes rewards. I like to think that I am an optimistic person. What others may consider a risk, I consider it an opportunity. Fear of taking risks can be more binding than the risk itself. I believe any chance taken is a learning opportunity. I do believe strategizing could provide less fear of the unknown. I like to think I have a bit of a balance when it comes to taking risks. Not taking a chance and fear of failing would be more disappointing to me than betting on myself.
