Today we’d like to introduce you to Marian Cooper.
Marian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a licensed clinical social worker who provides therapy to clients in the greater Houston area. Prior to going into private practice, I worked in community mental health for over eight years in New York City. I enjoyed the challenge of getting to work with all types of people, cultures, and issues. I decided to make the leap into private practice full-time right before Covid started last year (although I had no idea a major pandemic was on the horizon). I literally quit my job at the health center and a few weeks later, New York City shut down. While at the height of Covid, I provided virtual counseling services to clients struggling with anxiety.
In March 2021, I relocated to Houston to be closer to family. I am still offering virtual counseling to my clients in New York City but also have an office space here in Houston. I feel very lucky that I can see clients virtually and also return to in the office appointments. In my counseling practice, both virtual and in-person, I work with highly motivated individuals struggling with anxiety, stress, and the ups and downs of life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would describe the road as a little bumpy. Obtaining my education and experience was mostly straightforward. The bumps came with learning how to be a business owner, which, unfortunately, is not taught in social work school. As a therapist, I want to be an example and lead with transparency and sometimes, the ins and outs of being a business owner impacted my energy level. I would also say operating a business in two different states with two different time zones has been a challenge but one that I have been able to navigate. All in all, I love the work that I do and the people who trust me to help them figure themselves out. If I had to do it all over again, I definitely would.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Own the Moment Coaching and Therapy is a mental health private counseling practice that provides therapy to individuals in Houston and New York City who are struggling with anxiety, stress, and the transitions life throws our way. I am a licensed clinical social worker with a specialty in creative arts therapy counseling. This basically means I use an integrated approach to help my clients reach their end goals. Maybe in session, we are just talking, maybe we are acting out how to have a difficult conversation with a loved one, or using creative methods to tap into a specific feeling or emotion. I currently offer virtual appointments or in-person appointments at my office located in the Champions Forest area. As a therapist, I have been trained to work with all types of issues and concerns, but am excited to focus my practice on busy professionals in all industries struggling with the ups and downs of life.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
A favorite childhood memory I have is attending summer camp every year. It was nice to go on trips and we always ended the camp year with a play that I remember being terrified to act in but it would always turn out fine. I would do my lines and end up having a great time.
