Community Highlights: Meet Ramon Rosales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramon Rosales.

Hi Ramon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started when I was a young boy in my hometown of Quito, Ecuador when my father, also an avid photographer, gave me a small Canon camera.

Fast forward some 30 odd years or so later and I found myself, in my mid-forties, with plenty of free time to take photography to a more serious and professional level.

However, what I have really loved about being a photographer is the amazing people I have met in the last six years!

I have been blessed with a strong support network of friends and family who have encouraged me to continue with this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At first, photography was a way for me to cope with a change in my lifestyle that I was not planning to go through, but as I took more and more pictures of different genres, I realized that this is a very enriching and full filling experience.

It has been challenging at times. My experience level wasn’t that great, I didn’t know how to use my gear properly, I didn’t have a clear understanding of how to set up the different light settings or pose my clients and models, or what aperture was best for landscaping, etc, etc. and, trust me, it was frustrating and embarrassing some times.

Famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “your first 10,000 photographs are your worst” and even though this may sound harsh, the idea behind it is that professional photographers have an obligation to improve our skills and creativity- and this should transcend with everything else we do in life.

I firmly believe that I will never learned everything that is to know about photography, that’s why I’m constantly learning new techniques, tricks and hacks.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about RRosales Photography?
First and foremost, I focus on customer service. I want my clients, both paid and trade, to have a great experience in working with me.

My goal is to have a fun, relaxed and enjoyable photoshoot!

Great customer service, outstanding quality, clear communication and prompt delivery are what I offer to all my friends and clients.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
As a photographer, I found out that attending Meetups, workshops, photoshoots and observing what other talented photographers do is the best way to learn and better your skills and knowledge.

I have learned what to do and, specially, what NOT to do.

Every person you meet has the capacity to teach you something.

In most of these meetups and workshops, you will find skilled and talented photographers who will be delighted to share their knowledge if you are willing to listen and learn.

Ask questions, observe and then experiment on your own.
