Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Renee’.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since the age of five, I always knew I wanted to be an entertainer of some sort, although my mother would argue sooner. She always tells the story of me running to the TV and bouncing up and down on beat to Paula Abdul’s “straight up” at the age of two. Apparently, that’s when she knew haha. I was born in the border town of McAllen, Texas and I had a wholesome upbringing with tightknit family values. I started putting on performances for my family early on. As a little girl, I would stay up late at night studying the dance styles of Selena Quintanilla, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, and Aaliyah amongst the other greats in the ’90s. I started songwriting once I entered junior high school and haven’t stopped since. Throughout the years, I’ve received my dance training from multiple dance studios and also dance conventions. I currently train within the freestyle community here in Houston at Houstion: Revison. I’ve been blessed to dance in some prestigious venues and my dance credits include Baby Bash, Davido, Myoa, and opening up for Pitbull, and Jason Derulo. I am a woman of many creative hats which currently includes the pursuit of my own music. I also have a growing business of vintage clothing/custom reworks of ladies and menswear called The 90s Raised Me. Whew! I said a mouth full, hope you guys are still with me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has had its ups and downs along the way, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Some of the struggles include not having the means to fund dance classes, vocal lessons, and the certainty of my business even being a success. My advice to young women starting out on their journey would be to be vulnerable to the decision of simply starting. To be unafraid, to chase after what they want, and that a little faith in yourself goes a long way!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a Jack of many trades and talents! I’m a working Hip Hop dancer, I’m a singer/songwriter. I also have a vintage clothing business called “The 90s Raised Me”, and my regular 9-5 is a dog walker (which I love)!
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I would say if you believe it, you can achieve it! Maintain a level head and keep the faith in yourself intact.
