Conversations with the Inspiring Chelsea Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Green.

Chelsea, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is still in the process of being written; just as each of ours is. In the fall of 2016, I began to pursue going back to school to take the few courses I needed to earn my license as a counselor and add those wonderful letters at the end of my name. Chelsea Green, M.ed, LPC. It was a name written on my vision board and throughout many notebooks. It was what I knew I wanted. I had already earned a Master’s in School Counseling but this was next. Yes, more school! I applied to Sam Houston State University’s program and was accepted. As the entry process became close to being finalized, I became uneasy about it all. One day the university called to ask some final questions and one of the last questions I was asked was, “Are you sure you’re ready to begin?”. Then, as clear as can be the voice of God said, “No.” In all honesty, I took my eyes off the road to look around my car to see if someone was riding with me. That is how clear His voice was. So, I repeated that same response. From there, the feeling of unease left and a simple peace overtook me. Most would say that I was crazy for having gone through that entire process only to say no and walk away. What many don’t understand is that this was my response and His plan for me.

From there, God began to birth the plan He had for my life. I began a bible study within in my home just as He had shown me. Over the course of the past almost two years we have been meeting at my home every two weeks to study the word of God and I have loved every bit. Making this commitment and seeing it blossom further shows me that God was taking me into a different season. It was a season that many close to me and those did not understand.

As an adolescent and young adult, I’ve always had a dream of writing a book. Back then, I never knew the type of book I would write but I knew it would be one that would change the lives of those who read it. To get my feet wet I started The Urban Her in August of 2017. As scared as I was to open up in such a personal way, there were those around me anticipating its launch. I had no idea the number of lives it would touch and impact. At first, I dreamt of having a huge subscribers list and 1,000 shares on each of my posts but that is not my reality. However, I have received personal emails, texts, facebook messages and DMs from many who have commented on how much they appreciate the words that were written and/or spoken. For that, I am grateful because if I can impact the life of one person who knows how they can impact the lives of others.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never been a smooth road because I am human. One of the biggest struggles of my life has been gaining the approval of those around me. I would always seek out the opinions of others whenever I had an idea or vision God had given me. What I have learned is that when God gives you a vision, He will make provision for every piece of it. Everyone won’t get it and everyone won’t understand your passion and drive for it. This is why everyone’s opinions do not matter. I say that because due to accepting the opinions of others my judgment has been swayed and I have allowed others to push their ideas on me and try to change the original plan. God knows exactly what He desires for you to do and how it should be done. Just like He gave Noah the blueprint, plan, and timeline, He will do the same for you. He will place wise counsel around you and those who are going to contribute to the vision being manifest and take nothing away.

what should we know about The Urban Her? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Since 2015, I have been a middle school counselor and I enjoy serving in that capacity. I am also a wife, mother, minister, writer, and friend. My specialty is ENCOURAGEMENT! I have the desire to see others reach their goals, take steps in the right direction and be their best selves. Each day I make an effort to encourage every person I encounter. I have taken on the mindset behind Chick-fil-A’s employee training… you never know the story of the person you are serving. Therefore, always offer a smile and some form of encouragement. I have chosen to use my platform as a counselor, blogger, bible study leader, and YouTuber to encourage all those who partake. Each day people need to be reminded they are loved, valuable, capable and so much more because they may not always hear or experience it. I may not have the most followers or subscribers but I believe that I am being a blessing to someone each day.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There are so many resources that I enjoy daily! John Maxwell is an excellent author. I have been able to utilize the principles in his books at work, in bible study, and in my various leadership roles. I also thoroughly enjoy listening to Dr. Dharius Daniels, Pastor of Change Church (New Jersey). He preaches messages of transformation that truly cause the listener to dig deeper. Don’t Settle for Safe by Sarah Jakes Roberts is definitely a game changer as well. This text truly deals with matters of the heart and mind. Plus, her Woman Evolve podcast is off the chain! The Slight Edge: Turning simple disciplines into Massive Successes and Happiness by Jeff Olson is a book that is also worth the read. This taught me to not just talk about it but be about it. Lastly, Ruth Soukup’s podcast ‘Do It Scared’ is awesome. She challenges her listeners to work through fear to achieve the results you truly desire.

One of the things I do the most of is read my word and listen to messages each day. This feeds me in a way that I cannot explain.
