Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Vaughn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I officially started my business in 2016. For a while, I was just posting edited cell phone shots of my kids for fun and people started asking me how much I charge for sessions. I thought to myself, “if people want to pay me for cell phone pictures, I may need to start a business!” lol. I have always had an artistic eye and being a stay at home mom really lit a fire in me, so at the beginning of that year I bought everything I needed professionally to begin a photography business. I filed for an EIN and registered my business name known as Candid Crystal Photography. I continually educate myself on software, posing and the business aspect of photography. I chose the name Candid Crystal because my goal is to capture real and candid emotions, which is what we all want to look back and remember.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are always bumps in the road but the key to success is to NEVER GIVE UP. In the photography industry it can be very competitive and there is always something new to learn so I promised myself in the beginning that I would give myself grace to learn more and not get so caught up on trying to be an overnight success. Greatness takes time and that would be my advice to anyone starting out. It’s ok to make mistakes and never compare your journey to anyone else’s. Just keep striving for excellence and you will do well in your own time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Candid Crystal Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in families, senior & college graduates, branding/headshots, maternity and engagement. I am known for my friendly, down to earth personality. I do my best to make my sessions fun and relaxed. Some people have never even had professional photos done so I want it to be an enjoyable experience. On the flip side, I have also heard of bad experiences with other photographers so I aim NOT to be like those!
The images are only a fraction of my service. My goal is to give my clients a memorable experience that will leave them with the desire to come back.
I am most proud of the friendships and bonds I have formed with my clients. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories. The trust and wonderful experience I give my clients is what sets me apart from others. I genuinely care about people.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I have always been artistic and had a love for the arts, which is what makes me good at photography. You have to have an eye for angles, lighting and composition for a photo to come to life and worth getting paid for. It wasn’t until I had kids of my own that I realized I enjoyed photography. I was raised by a single mother who instilled in me to have a strong work ethic and that is what I live by.
