Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wang.
Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
About eight years ago, I decided to get my esthetics license because I was interested in skin care. As I was going through school, I fell in love with waxing and decided I wanted to learn more about this field. After receiving my license, I went to work for a salon doing primarily waxing. While I was there, I discovered there were better techniques and products out there, if I was willing to put in the time to find them. I discovered that the technique that worked best for me and for my clients wasn’t being used by anyone else, so I decided it was time to go into business for myself. After finding what I think are the best waxing products available, Serene Wax Boutique came to fruition. Opened in November of 2013, Serene slowly became the best kept secret in the Westchase area. Through hard work, dedicated employees and over 120 reviews on yelp, maintaining a 5-star rating, Serene Wax Boutique has outgrown it’s singular location, giving us the opportunity to open a second store summer of 2018.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anyone who tells you opening your own business is easy is a liar! The countless hours spent away from my family is probably the hardest part of opening a business. You will always find issues, especially in the salon industry, with finding good employees and marketing new clients. You are constantly thinking of ways to reach out to your community and other businesses in the same industry as you. As most businesses in Houston can tell you, Harvey definitely took a toll on our business, and the Memorial area. After the hurricane, we saw many of our clients struggling to rebuild and when you’re faced with that, it makes you question when you will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We found getting back to our regular routine and showing the community we were still here helped tremendously. My advice for other women would be to be patient, always be open to take advice, and never stop your continued education. When you find something you’re passionate about, stick with it, there will be struggles and pitfalls, but always remember what made you fall in love with it in the first place.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Serene Wax Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
Serene Wax Boutique is a full-body waxing salon, meaning we remove hair from the entire body using soft wax, in a technique you will not find anywhere else in Houston. We specialize in Brazilian wax, which is our most popular service as well. A Brazilian wax will remove all of the hair in a woman’s intimate area, and our technique will minimize the discomfort of hair removal. We are also very proud of our eyebrow experience as well. We always start each service with a consultation, we want to know what your expectations for your eyebrows are and if what you’re looking for is a result that can be obtained. We also have a staff fully trained in the “Kelley Baker Brows” technique and product line. I think the thing that most sets us apart from other waxing salons, in not only Houston, but I would say Texas and beyond, is our customer service. When it comes to a service as intimate as the one we provide, you really have to care about what you do and make your guests feel welcome. From the moment you walk in the door, you not only a client, but a friend as well. While that may sound cheesy, it’s true. They know they can call and their waxer will be here. All of our staff has been here for years, and anyone in the salon industry can vouch for how important that is.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
In the waxing industry, we count ourselves very fortunate because we meet people from all walks of life. In that sense, I guess you would say networking has been fairly easy for us. As much as we have cultivated relationships with our clients, they also care about us and want to see the business succeed. I would say don’t be afraid to speak with anyone, from clients to neighboring businesses to social media. Our Instagram following has more than doubled in the past year and that is because of our strong dedication to posting daily and staying relevant to today’s market.
