Conversations with the Inspiring Latoya Calvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Calvin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Latoya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
About 3 years ago, while working as a 911 dispatcher, I decided to work on starting a career in the beauty industry. I enrolled in beauty school as a full-time student all while working as a full-time dispatcher. It definitely was not an easy task but I was determined to make it work. Within a years time, I completed beauty school, quit my full-time job and moved to Houston, TX. This is where my career in the beauty industry started. I began to do free work around the city for networking purposes. While developing relationships with creatives around the city I found my mentor Kim Clark. Kim hired me for her internship program as an Assistant Makeup Artist. During this internship, I gained so much knowledge about makeup artistry and the way of the business. After the internship, Kim offered me a position with Kim Clark Artistry as a Jr Makeup Artist/Assistant. My career has been budding every since.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being in the beauty industry is not an easy job. Finding your aesthetic and staying true to it all while giving your audience what the want to see can be challenging. Finding work can be a challenge. You actually have to go find work in order to stay busy in the industry and sometimes for no pay. It’s just a sacrifice you make to grow your brand. My advice would be to stay consistent and persistent.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Latoya LX story. Tell us more about the business.
I love to create editorial makeup looks. That’s the direction I’d like my career to go so that’s what I create.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I’m always buying magazines. I want to see what’s on the runway and make those looks my own. I’m inspired by several creatives on Instagram and YouTube. Sometimes, I’m inspired to create looks based on things I experience in life and how they make me feel.
