Today we’d like to introduce you to Rabia Rehman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rabia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I think I was into makeup all my life I suppose! I remember as a child always playing around with my mother’s make up and asking her to let me apply it for her on whenever I saw her getting dressed up. I also had a strong inclination towards art and spent a lot of time painting or drawing as far back as I can remember.
A few years ago, I started working with Estée Lauder as a Beauty Advisor & Skin Care Consultant and that is when my interest in makeup as a creative outlet and art form grew tremendously. I was able to make women look beautiful and feel great about themselves by doing something I loved doing!
After training and partnering with leading cosmetic artists and salons in the Houston area, I formed “Makeup by Bia” – a platform through which my makeup artistry brings beauty into the lives of women.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Makeup Artistry world is full of creative individuals and for me to start as a freelancer and then go on to form the brand “Makeup by Bia” was a big step.
I realized pretty quickly that growing your own brand is pretty hard work!
While you enjoy the freedom of not reporting to any agency or company, you spend long days and evenings building a clientele as you are your own boss. While on a good day, you reap all the rewards, on bad days you have to face and bear difficulties along the way.
My advice to anyone interested in a makeup career is to learn as much as you can before you venture out. You need to keep your learning hat on at all times. You also need to build a portfolio or work that showcases your talents and skills through a diversified range of work. Most of all, you have to remain persistent and give your best to every client.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your business story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Certified Make-Up Artist based in Houston, TX. I have a passion for beauty, art, and fashion which have been influencing factors in my life from a very early age.
My first fashion shoot was something I was very proud of. My work being appreciated by my mentors made me the happiest person! I guess for any aspiring creative artist, being appreciated for your work is the most uplifting thing one can hear.
What sets me apart from others is my diverse background and experience. The synergy of the two creates a unique style where I am able to enhance and highlight the natural beauty of my subjects, regardless of ethnicity or age.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
For many women, I believe the fastest route to success is launching their own business. Today’s start-up culture empowers women to be their own boss and pay their own salary, defining how they want to work and making the balance of career and family life easier.
Entrepreneurship presents a path for women to close the pay gap and rise to leadership positions, on their own terms.
