Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Bateman.
Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from college with a degree in business marketing from The University of Texas at Austin, I decided to take an adventure to Southern California. An internship at MTV Latin America during my senior year gave me a contact for a full-time position at FOX in Century City, Los Angeles. Funny enough, I lived on Texas Avenue. After a year with FOX in the research (think Nielsen Ratings) department, I jumped to a higher position at Disney. As much fun as LA and the entertainment industry were, it just wasn’t cutting it for me. I realized then that I needed space to stretch, both personally and professionally!
I packed up what little I had and moved to North Lake Tahoe (think 1970’s Olympics). Through a personal connection, I landed a job as a sales manager for a Title Company. My role was to entertain real estate people on the slopes, lake and golf courses! After a year of doing that, I realized there was much more to life (think $$ and FREEDOM) on the REALTOR side of things. So, I obtained CA my real estate license in 2003. The next few years were nothing short of amazing. I was in my 20’s, making a lot of money and spending all my time in the mountains. I bought 2 homes, a dog and life was great!
Then, 2006 came about. It hit my area like a truck. The next couple of years taught me a ton about life. The second home market vacation market of Lake Tahoe made a big thud, especially from a real estate perspective.
It was during that time that I decided to take an extended visit ‘home’. My mom lived and worked in the Pearland, Texas area just South of Houston. My trip was really just to reboot emotionally, but I ended up taking a huge interest in the strong and steady job markets of South Houston. While much of California was experiencing terrible housing losses, Pearland was booming. I quietly got my Texas Real Estate License.
In early 2008, I composed an email to a small group of grade school contacts announcing myself as a LOCAL REALTOR. To my surprise, I had my first Pearland, Texas listing within a week. In fact, I even SOLD the home to a buyer. While working in both markets (Tahoe and Houston), things fell together much better and a lot faster in Texas. I decided to sell my home in California and jump in with two feet. And boy, was my mom happy!
The rest was a lot of hard work and what you see today!
Has it been a smooth road?
It was most definitely not a smooth road! However, all of the risks I took in my 20’s led me to the greatest adventure. If I have advice for young women it would be to listen to yourself, trust yourself. It has taken me all these years to appreciate my journey. Mine wasn’t the typical path that women were following.
Failing is just a lesson along the way. With hard work, you’ll get to where you want to be. And NEVER think you’ve got it all figured out!
I have never been afraid of risks, but I’m terrified of failing. Now, even in my 40’s, I’ve had some pretty substantial hiccups both personally and professionally. But, it keeps me on my toes. I want to learn or try something new every day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Stephanie Bateman Luxury Group, SBLuxG story. Tell us more about it.
