Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael “Bundy” McMillian
Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, as far as I could remember, with the deep passion I have for music, I always wanted to become a mixtape DJ or mixtape producer ever since I was maybe 12 or 13 years old when I discovered my first Swisha House tape, which was a known group from the North Side of Houston. The influences that I acquired from DJ Screw of the Southside and Michael Watts/Ron C of the Northside, prompted me to imitate those styles and create my own versions in my hometown of Port Arthur Texas. After years and years of working on my craft, I was able to become a prominent mixtape DJ, working mainly with underground artist from my area and exposing their music throughout the city and surrounding areas. As a graduate of Texas Southern University, being exposed to the college life has also helped propel my journey, becoming a prominent mixtape DJ on campus, which let me to a brief stint on doing two mixtape projects with Beanie Sigel and the State Property record label and also becoming an official DJ for the popular at the time Algierz clothing line.
As far as the podcasting, I also always had a niche for speaking my mind, which is how the DONT PISS ME OFF chapter comes into play, which originally started as a Facebook video series in 2010, and years later turned into a podcasting series which can be found on Spotify and YouTube as well. I also have two other similar shows, which are titled IM JUST ASKIN which is a podcast that I host along with a good friend of mine, Cherise, and I also have a FB live show I do every Sunday from my own patio which is titled “Patio Talk With Mike Bundy” which is current events and various topics are discussed with participation from other FB users.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have definitely faced obstacles in my journey. Starting out I didn’t have the best of the best music equipment or the best quality sounding material so that can play a major part in people deciding to work with you. I had to work very hard to not only provide myself with the things I needed to make a better lane for myself, but to also prove to people that my work ethic and my brand was something that they could enjoy and also benefit from. I think I went through the normal stages of trying to make a name for yourself, a lot of self-criticism and self-doubt but I have always made sure to pull myself together and keep traveling on the road to success. I use to get so discouraged if I felt like things were not going the way I planned it in the time I planned it but I had to learn and teach myself that patience is key and things will always work themselves out at the right times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a local mixtapes DJ and Host and also a Podcaster. I specialize in hosting mixtapes, blends and remixes and producing and making beats for underground and upcoming artist. I’ve always liked to work with local artist because I feel like as a local or unknown artist, it may be difficult for them to obtain music or spread music through the city and I like to be an aid in adding their music to mixtapes and mix shows. As far as podcasting, I have always been told that I have a unique way of getting the people to engage in conversation via FB and that when I would come up with topics of discussion, it would always bring the people in to talk so I decided to join the podcasting world and utilize my voice to the best of my ability and discuss various topics via podcasting. I. Think I am most proud of my ability to step out and try different things without the feeling of fear. It took a long time to master that but I have. What sets me part from others podcasting wise is that my podcasts are really short. In a world where the average pod is 1 hour or better, all of my episodes are under 20 minutes and straight to the point. “Podcasting under 20 minutes” is my slogan.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I truly believe that in the next 5-10 years, the industry in which I’m in will only evolve. I am part of an evolving industry as well as something that has been around for decades upon decades. The need for good music will always here. Good conversation and topics of discussion will also always be here. The industry can only get better with time. In the next five to ten years, I hope to be able to use my talents to take me to the next level, working with major industry artists and hosting my own national radio or podcasting show.
