Conversations with Kayla Vaughn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Vaughn.

Hi Kayla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved taking photos, but photography really became a passion when I got my first DSLR camera for my 16th birthday! I started out by taking photos of nature, and over the last ten years have slowly expanded to portrait photography as well. I’m quite the sentimentalist and I think that’s a large part of why I love photography so much. Photography allows us to capture precious, fleeting moments in our lives so that they can last forever. Every photograph tells a story, and I find it to be such a privilege to tell the unique stories of others through this creative outlet.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my college years, I found myself using photography as a creative way to celebrate friends and family during various milestones in their lives but considered it more of a hobby than a business. Shortly after I graduated with my nursing degree in 2016, I made a big move from Kansas to Texas to be closer to my now-husband. For the first couple of years I lived in Texas, I focused on transitioning to new roles and kind of lost touch with my love for photography. It wasn’t until the spring of 2019, when I was newly married and had an established job as a nurse, that I really began to get the photography itch again and decided to pursue photography as a part-time job. Rediscovering my passion for photography has been such a blessing to me the last couple of years and has brought so much joy to my life!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a lifestyle photographer specializing in family, portrait, and fitness photography! I have a pretty laid-back approach to my photography sessions and love capturing the authentic, natural interactions of my clients. This is actually the reason that I especially love sessions with littles – you just never know what you’re going to get, which often results in some extra sweet moments!

My husband works in the fitness industry, which has also allowed me to stretch my photography skills in a new way. As a nurse, I have a true appreciation for what the human body is capable of – I think this is why I have really come to love fitness sessions too!

No matter how much I love a session, the absolute best feeling I get as a photographer is when I have clients tell me how much they cherish their photos. There is truly no bigger honor than being able to freeze the most special times in people’s lives so that they can hold on to those moments forever.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are those from our family vacations! My parents valued being able to take my sister and I on an annual family trip growing up, and as an adult, I have so much appreciation for that. One of my absolute favorite trips was the two week road trip we made across the western half of the United States. That trip was filled with so many adventures (maybe a few sibling disagreements too) and we had the opportunity to experience some truly magnificent views of mother nature. I remember this trip was just shortly after I’d been gifted my very first DSLR camera and I came home with hundreds and hundreds of photos from that trip!
