Conversations with Lubna Jamal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lubna Jamal.

Lubna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved to bake and cook from a young age. I started off by baking birthday cakes for my siblings and I started with the boxed mixes and frostings, this was when I was around 10-12 years old.

From there, I slowly began experimenting with recipes. Baking cookies, cakes, frosting and more from scratch. I always loved sharing my creations with my family and friends.

Finally in 2016, with lot’s of encouragement from my Family and Husband, DecadencebyLubna was born! My business started off with the regular cakes and cookies but then eventually I began to delve into the world of fusion desserts. Our Gulab Jamun Cheesecake was the first in Houston, and to this day is our Best-Selling Dessert!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was really hard to get the word out about my business when I first started. It took a lot of marketing and constant posting to start getting a wider clientele than just family and friends of the family.

It’s also very hard in general as a Baker because I like to make sure all my orders are FRESHLY BAKED. This gets hectic in a Home Kitchen especially during the holidays when there are a lot of orders to complete in a short time. However, I love what I do and the support and reviews I get from my clients is definitely worth the struggle!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My main focus in my desserts is coming up with unique/Indian Fusion desserts. I have on my menu regular items such as Vanilla and Marble cakes and Chocolate Chip Cookies etc, but I like to come up with more innovative desserts as well.

I am constantly experimenting and testing out recipes for new desserts. I have become well known for my Indian/Pakistani Fusion desserts so that has become my main business theme at this point. Some of our best-selling fusion desserts are: The Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, Knafeh Cheesecake, Rasmalai Cupcakes, Falooda Tres Leches.

I am also most proud of the fact that everything that I make in my kitchen is from scratch and always using the best quality ingredients. I don’t use any shortcuts when making my desserts and invest the most time and attention to detail that I possibly can when making every single order.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that risk is very necessary whenever you start your own business. Especially in a business such as a Home Bakery you have to invest in a lot of supplies to even get started. Such as baking pans, premium food colors, spatulas, piping tips, stand mixers, packaging for the desserts, labels for branding, etc.

Putting so much money into these supplies is a bit scary at first because you don’t know if you’re going to make all that back in profits. However that is a leap that I decided to take because of my passion for baking for others. And I am happy to say that that risk that I took has definitely proved to be worth it!
