Conversations with Skiler Joi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skiler Joi.

Hi Skiler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been my passion I remember as far as being six, I’ve always wanted to sing I grew up listening to Luther Vandross and Tina Turner. I loved how music was very personal for them and that’s what I wanted for myself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, I’d be lying if I said it was smooth. Being an independent artist is a struggle within itself more so mentally at least for myself. Having little support from my loved ones makes it challenging. There has been times where I wanted to just put the mic down and go to school to do something more normal, I guess. But I’ve always found my way back to the studio, picking up new skills to help me further, such as engineering. I can engineer myself. I write and arrange all my songs. I’m really a one-woman army when I look at it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m SkilerJOI. I’m a singer, songwriter and audio engineer out of Memphis. I’m all things music. I’m most proud of my songwriting abilities. Aside from my own music, I’ve wrote for a few artist around the globe. I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t sound like anyone else. I have my own lane. I don’t make music about drugs and guns; that’s not my MO; it’s cool but that’s not what I’m about. I just released an EP entitled Y’all Know I’m Shy it’s on every streaming platform you should check that out. It’s energetic.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is finding that one thing that makes you happy or what you’re good at and you capitalize off it. Like you just go dominate.
